View Full Version : No resolutions?

I would have thought that, by now, we'd have at least a hundred new members
to this group who, with good intentions, would remain members in good
standing until at least Monday or Tuesday of next week.

Really, though, do you see nyd as an opportunity to renew your weight loss
vows?

I always resolve to get off Internet groups but just like Woody Allen's
uncle who thinks he's a chicken I continue to remain as someone may
need the eggs!

Not for me personally. Not this year anyway. I've done new year's
resolutions before. I never had success with any of them. It only worked
for me when *I* was ready to make the commitment, not because of the
earth's position relative to the sun.

I'm sure there will be more posts from people trying to maintain their diet
some time next week.

I've never been big on new year resolutions either. I feel making a
commitment or setting a goal doesn't need to depend on the time of year<g>

I set a goal earlier this year of biking a century next summer.

I like to establish some resolutions -- really more like goals -- each
new year (and in fact I posted some a few weeks ago in response to a
post from Ignoramus). This year my weight-loss specific goal is to
continue to maintain my loss. I have some other goals related to
fitness -- like a bodyweight bench (extremely close now) and a single
pull-up (less so), and entering some competitions. I need to
formulate some kind of goal related to running, too, I think. (I also
have some that aren't particularly germane to this list.)

Naw, I don't bother with resolutions. If I want to change something in
my life I do it when I want, not when society says I should. I'm a
rebel. :)

I'm absolutely with you on this Phil. January 1 is the time of year
I'm least likely to resolve to do anything. The best results for me
come when I'm ready, as you say.

New Year must be the worst time of year to join a gym. We go swimming
much of the year, and it's always amusing to notice how busy the pool
suddenly gets for the first few weeks of January, and then most of
these people disappear and it's back to the regulars.

Quitting usenet newsgroups -- that's a good one.

I run year-round. Starting January 2nd I have noticed a few extra people
out running. Usually they are wearing the gray sweats (AKA Rocky Balboa).
Rarely (and sadly) do any of them keep running past mid January.

well. for me, the easy way out is to stop making resolutions after so
many failed ones before. But I have refrained from making resolutions in
the past, but i noticed that when i stop thinking big, oftentimes i stop
working at all.

I'm enjoying this diet so far. I love starting on my NY-Resolution in
Thanksgiving. This is somehting I have not tried before--gettting a
headstart on my weightloss goals. and it does take the pressure off. At
least I'm not lamenting on New Years Eve about how an entire year passed
and all i have to show for it weightloss-wise is a net gain of 10 lbs.
Altho I only feel skinnier (not really tracking weight due to fear of
overstress) on mondays and wednesdays, I am happy with the effort. I
think as long as i keep track of my calories, I should be okay.

I'm in that camp also. I am always setting goals, large and small, and then
modifying them as life requires. I have a goal of riding the local metric
century this summer but might not be able to because of surgery. One of my
other goals is to ride in at least 5 different states this summer :)

I have a similar goal I set a few years ago. I probably won't finish this
goal until after I've retired and have more time to travel. The goal is to
ride one bike trail in each state. I haven't decided if I will include
Hawaii or Alaska yet<g>

A few years ago my son and I took a trip across the country. He made it a
point to ride his skateboard in every state we went through from Los Angeles
to Michigan and then to Boston Mass. -- dt

Is the century a supported ride? I took a free Saturday morning and did one
unsupported a few months back. Easy pace and plenty of stops; it was fun.
And due to my location, just about every ride is in two different states.

Happy riding!

That's kind of how I'm doing it. I have to drive from Wisconisn to
Pennsylvania and then up to Maine so I'm planning to ride in IL (Chicago
lakefront), OH (with Bev), PA, NJ, and ME (with Laurie). I may make
additional stops on the way up to Maine and will probably travel home via
Canada and do some riding there depending on how much time I have.

The metric century ride up here is an annual event for charity and is
supported. I'm sure there are full century rides too and if it turns out
that I'm no longer able to consider running a marathon then I'll set my
sights on some full century rides.
