SlimFast & Maltitol: At Stop & Shop

As promised, I checked out the story on the SlimFast low carb shake. I
thought I'd remembered seeing that the first ingredient was maltitol and
that the actual carb count was 18 gm.

When I went to Stop & Shop today, the only SlimFast shakes they had were the
non-low carb ones, however, they did have the Slim Fast Meal Replacement low
carb bar.

The first ingredient in the Slim Fast low carb bar, was "Maltitol syrup."
The total carb count was 17 of which 14 grams was maltitol.

So I feel a bit better about my memory! There definitely was a SlimFast low
carb product on our shelves where maltitol was the primary ingredient. I
hadn't made that up. Whether they ever had the low carb SlimFast shakes and
what had been in them, there was no one around to tell me.

BTW, on this visit the diet stuff was all in the pharmacy as the seasonal
"January Diet" section in the middle of the store had been replaced with the
Feburary "To hell with the diet, let's eat chips and soda" SuperBowl shelf.

Huh? No one said you made anything up. I said you were probably
mistaken. You said the *shakes* had maltitol in them, not a Slim Fast
product in general. Your memory was faulty, it happens to everyone
once in a while.
I did find one brand of shake that had sugar alcohols in them -
Glucerna, for diabetics. They each had 7 grams of sugar alcohols.

I couldn't help wondering *why* it had to contain sugar alcohol at
all. In the bars and candies they provide bulk and they keep the
product moist, so there's a reason for their presence, but in the
shakes they are truly unnecessary. Odd.

Take care,
Carmen
