1 lb/week ?
Should that be doable. I won't share #'s here except to say i'd like
to lose weight at that rate. I feel like i've been killing myself in the gym (cardio and weights) 3-4 times a week since September and not getting the results i want. Yet, I'm eating mostly diet shakes, nutrition bars, veggies, fruits, chicken, the odd popsicle or cookie (rare), that's about it, oh maybe jello and pasta once a week maybe (bad carbs). Anyone ? Need to hit the gym every day ? 4-6 hours day past exhaustion ? Counterproductive ? |

It's not what you eat that matters as such, it's the amount, in calories. Even if you don't want to weigh and measure every mouthful (I certainly don't), it helps to get some idea of how many calories you're eating per day. Balance that with what you burn in the gym and otherwise and aim for a 500 calorie deficit per day, which amounts to about pound lost per week. There are tools like fitday.com which make it fairly easy to estimate these things. Anyone ? Need to hit the gym every day ? 4-6 hours day past exhaustion ? Counterproductive ? Well, you can exercise more or eat less. For the long term, eating less is easier to keep up than working out a lot. Time restrictions, illness, injuries and such can make it hard sometimes. I find that heavy exercise increases my appetite. On the other hand, moderate weight training doesn't, not that I can train very hard if not eating. |

Eat 500 calories less each day, you'll see it falling off, although water bounce/etc. may make it less noticeable. I feel like i've been killing myself in the gym (cardio and weights) 3-4 times a week since September and not getting the results i want. Maybe you're just training too hard. What's your workout rotation like? You should not be doing the same things every time you go. I like to do an hour of cardio (varied between long endurance and high intensity intervals) followed by an hour or so of weights, on a really simple arms/legs rotation. Be sure to give yourself a resting period, too. Are those 3-4 times in a week one right after another? It's not a bad idea to take it easy the day after a hard workout. Yet, I'm eating mostly diet shakes, nutrition bars, veggies, fruits, chicken, the odd popsicle or cookie (rare), that's about it, oh maybe jello and pasta once a week maybe (bad carbs). Doesn't sound like you're getting much protein at all. Unless it's really working out for you, I recommend just ditching the diet shakes and bars. Most of that market is hokey BS that looks nutritious, but carries very little dietary value. Eat more fish. Anyone ? Need to hit the gym every day ? 4-6 hours day past exhaustion ? Counterproductive ? Don't run yourself into the ground. If you're really concerned with the length of your workout, wear a heart monitor and read some literature on target heart rate, then base your workout around that instead. |
