Hershey in low carb market

My girlfriend came over the other day and the first thing out of her
mouth, "Guess what? I had chocolate at the supermarket. Hershey's now
has a low-carb bar, and it was yummy."

I looked at her blankly, then sighed. And then I reminded her that it
was junk food.

I think this is going to be an all-too-often occurrence with a lot of
people out there that haven't "realized" that it's not just about
low-carb but low-carb AND real food.

(p.s. I am getting rid of the alias coderx. I don't like it. Gotta
think up a new one instead of using my real name.)

I was just thinking about this type of thing. It seems when Dr. Atkins died
all hell broke loose. There are all kind of junk food low carb meals, candy
bars and whatever else.

It is a shame so many people are going to eat that crap.

There are people who eat that kind of crap once in a while for
convenience sake, and it's no biggie. But I think people who make it a
daily, by the case ritual are robbing themselves of the taste of real
food, bigtime. It's so nice to really have my taste buds clear of that
garbage, so I can have a *better* idea of what red bell peppers taste
like, the different flavors in spinach.

IMO, real food that I once thought to be bland and boring is a new and
exciting experience, and it's like I am tasting it again for the first
time. Seriously, I thought I knew what these foods tasted like, but
that was originally only as a seasoning for pizza. Fresh parsley used
to be a little sprig on the side, now it's the main event in a salad.
Almost every bite is an "I never knew it tasted this good" event.

YMMV, IMHO, etc etc...

I think hell broke loose well before Atkins died....in fact, I think he had
a hand in it...

Not necessarily. If you keep your carb consumption low you are low carbing.
If you are eating only "real" food you are being some kind of purist. You
can low carb without being a purist about junk food. You can also avoid all
junk food without low carbing. They are two different things. If you wish
to embrace them both that is your choice but don't push your values on
everyone else.

Since when is free speech pushing values onto someone? Since when is
not agreeing with someone thinking the other person is pushing values
onto them?

Quit with the being so sensitive nonsense. Get real.

Neither side seems to distinguish 'low-carb', 'no-carb', and
'slow-carb.' All those can be useful, even for losing weight; plans
vary, mileage varies. For some people who are 'low-carbing' for BG
rather than weight, 'slow-carb' can be more important than low.

Also there's a lot of difference between one sweetener and another.
Can't just look at Malitol and assume all the other sweeteners are that
high GL.

I haven't tried the others yet, but I find glycerine/glycerol very good,
very nourishing. (Has some carbs and calories but fewer than
conventional sugar I think.)

Glycemic Load (ie, effect on BG level soon after eating)

18 for Honey (Canada)[GR]
11 for Maltose[GR]
10 for Glucose/Dextrose/normal sugar[GR]
7 for 99% Malitol product[GR]
5 for Lactose{GR]
2 for Fructose[GR]
1 for Xylitol[GR]

0 for Glycerol/Gylcerine[M]
0 for Polydextrose[M]

"real" is entirely subjective, which mostly renders categories like this
useless.
