I understand the mercury risks of tuna, but I still believe that it's
probably ok in moderation. It's a great source of lean protein... What I
want to know is, which type/brand of tuna tastes the best? Specifically,
I'm looking at Starkist lemon pepper tuna fillet in the pouch, and the
Starkist chunk tuna in pouch in flavors such as hikory and sweet & spicy.
And when it comes to the canned stuff, which tends to be the most
palatable?

Betsy

I don't know about taste because I've always bought the same type of any
brand and they all taste the same to me. I just finished reading a book
called "What To Eat: And Aisle-by-Aisle Guide to Savvy Food Choices and Good
Eating" by Marion Nestle. In the section on fish/mercury/PCBs she says that
the safest tuna is canned chunk or light tuna that is not labeled "white";
in other words, the cheap stuff. Personally, I'm not sure if I'll ever eat
any fish again after reading the book. I was never much of a fish fan to
begin with.

Betsy,

I can only offer up Bumble-Bee Low-Sodium solid white albacore, add some
fine chopped celery, some Trader Joe's low-fat mayonaise, pepper to taste
and apply onto (the then) Trader Joe's no-sodium whole wheat bread,
toasted, with lettuce and that's fine dining. Serve open-faced to cut
back on calories and other negative nutrients.

Can you tell that I have no taste? Add some low-fat cheese if you like to
live dangerously. Like The Historian and I do. ;)

Andy

I've read that the white albacore tuna is significantly higher in
mercury than the light. I'm not sure why, but I like the light
anyway. I buy either Bumble Bee or Chicken of the Sea and haven't
noticed a difference between the two. I like canned tuna a lot.

WalMart always has it.

Bumble Bee albacore is best if they sell it in your town, I have to stock
up on it when I go to the next largest city to me. But overall I will buy
any brand but only albacore and I also love the tuna in the pouches, it is
the dryest and best for making salads out of IMO.

The albacore comes from a bigger fish -- IOW, the fish had more time to
absorb mercury from the environment.

Yes, but then you have to shop at Wal-Mart.

That's what I was thinking.

Gads, I've never seen so many fat people all in one place as at a
Wal*mart parking lot on a Saturday morning.

There seems to be some correlation about people who make poor choices.

Henry Rollins tells some funny stories about shopping at Wal-Mart while
on tour. Good stuff.

I've shopped there in the past, but I ended up deciding that I couldn't
support them. I can afford to do my shopping elsewhere, so I do.

DH and I made the same decision last summer and haven't set foot in one
since.

I know there are people who feel like they can't afford to shop
elsewhere, but I knew I could.

I don't suppose they'll ever be brought down, but it's nice to know
there are other people out there who've made the decision not to support
it.
