Here is something that someone posted a few weeks back that was extremely
helpful. I saved it for future reference and added my own disclaimer at the
bottom.

Thanks for reposting this, Chris. I must've missed it the first time
around. Anyway, I'd like to add a couple of comments of my own to this...

KETOGENIC (ATKINS') DIET

ACCEPTABLE FOODS

[SNIP]

Fats & Oils:
Olive Oil, Vegetable Oil, Canola Oil, Walnut Oil, Soybean Oil, Grapeseed
Oil, Sesame Oil, Sunflower Oil, Safflower Oil, Butter

I can agree with the olive oil and butter, but I did a lot of research
over the summer that indicates that most modern, highly-processed-and-
refined vegetable oils (corn, soybean, peanut, canola, etc.) are high in
trans fats and should be avoided like the plague.

Artificial Sweeteners:
Sucralose (Splenda), Saccharin (Sweet N' Low)

See below...

Beverages:
Filtered, Mineral, Spring, Tap Water, Club Soda, Heavy Cream, Decaf-Coffee,
Decaf-Tea, Herb Tea, Lemon Juice

Green tea is also thought to be preferable to the black variety.

It should also be mentioned that one should drink at least 64 oz of
water or other non-caloric drinks each day.

UNACCEPTABLE FOODS

AVOID SUGAR:

I would say, "Avoid all foods or drinks *containing* sugar". :)

Instead, use artificial sweeteners such as sucralose or saccharin.

....or better, yet, try to learn to like unsweetened drinks, as much as
possible. I've discovered that I now prefer my iced tea unsweetened
(much to my surprise!), and I'm working on developing a taste for
unsweetened coffee and hot tea. ;)

[SNIP]

AVOID CAFFEINE:
Excessive caffeine has been shown to cause low blood sugar, which can make
you crave sugar.

This has been the hardest thing for me I think. Started induction 2 weeks
ago today. I (used to) drink hot tea like others drink coffee. My personal
fave is Constant Comment with Cinnamon Hazelnut creamer. /sigh I miss it
sooooo much. I'm waiting for the time I can start adding it back into my
diet. The main obstacle are the carbs in the creamer. I can handle the
Splenda in my tea if I can have my creamer. I just cannot stand the taste
of Splenda in my tea without something to "soften" the blow iykwim.

Angela,
Compare regular "cream" to your non-dairy creamer. I don't know what the
carb count is on either one, however, a lot of people in this NG use regular
cream in a lot of stuff. Check it out.

I sympathize, Angela. :)

Actually, I gave up cream/creamers years ago, but I haven't been able to
let go of sweeteners, just yet. ;)

If you are still using creamers, consider using *real* cream, instead.
