Anyone who is thinking or planning to have this surgery, please
reconsider. I just came back from a wake of a co-worker who died after
suffering complications two days after surgery. I could not talk him out
of it. He said that he knew the risks involved. All I can do now is pray
for his family.

My condolences to you and his family.

My daughter has a friend that her mom has also had this surgery and she has
been in and out of the hospital on a regular basis for one ailment or
another and all stems from this surgery. My daughter told me that she had
to have emergency surgery to have her appendix removed this week. My
daughter has also told me that she will stand between me and the doctor if I
even consider this surgery at all. The bad thing is my doctor, who is see
about every 6 months for another problem, not related to weight, asks me
every time I see him if I would consider this surgery. I have told him
emphatically every time that I am NOT interested and to please stop
mentioning it to me, as I feel there are too many risks with this surgery
and the risks out weigh the benefits tremendously.

I thought that doctors only considered the surgery as a last resort. Since
you have started losing weight I wouldn't think that he would mention it any
more. Shame on him for pressuring you into having this dangerous surgery.

That is the way I felt too, even after losing weight and telling him I was
on weight watchers he still mentions it, it is very frustrating. I would
change doctors, but he is the only one out of about 8 different doctors that
was able to pinpoint/diagnose the problem I have had for years. So because
of that I stick with him and tell him, NO as soon as he even starts to
mention it. I think it has become a joke with him as he laughs a little and
gives me a big smile when I tell him there is no way I would consider it and
also that he is wasting his breath even mentioning to me. I think he got
two words out the last time I saw him in regards to this, he knows I am
adamantly opposed to this way of losing weight.

Also on a side note, I consider people that have this surgery as someone
that can not control their intake of food. IE: eating a whole pizza and a
pitcher of beer or soda in a sitting and then adding a pie for dessert.
Basically out of control eating, because this surgery severely limits the
amount of food/drink you can take in at any given time. I do not have this
problem and hate that feeling of being miserably full. I know what
contributed to my weight gain to begin with and it all started as a child,
eating high calorie/high fat foods and little exercise if any. I started
getting fat when I was about 10-11 years old and have always been
overweight. At the age of 12-13, I weighed 200 lbs then. Did my mom stop
buying the sodas and cheese puffs? No, she bought them and I would eat the
whole bag and down a couple of cokes (daily) when I would get home from
school. In the mean time, I did not do any kind of activity (exercise) and
sat on my butt watching TV all night. So over time, I continued to put on
weight. I have since learned that reasonable diet and exercise is the best
way to lose weight and keep it off. The weight watcher plan works well in
my life for this.

It may well be that it has become a joke, and he is just trying to
find out if you are still actively losing weight. If your attitude to
this surgery changes and you say yes, he'll probably get very worried
and try to find out why you have changed your mind. As long as you
vehemently say NO he knows you are successfully losing weight the
right way.
On the other hand what do I know:)

I'm sorry for the loss of your friend. I have always thought the risks were
too great with this surgery. Also they are still discovering benefits from
fruits and vegetables that were unknown before. This surgery does not allow
eating a normal healthy diet afterward and in my opinion cannot be healthy.
No one may ever really know how many medical problems are caused by the poor
diet. For instance if one of the patients dies from cancer 10 years later
it will not be attributed to the WLS.

Agree. He may also be trying to keep you on track with WW given your
feelings about the alternative.
