TAKE CARE! Results of a month with Atkins.

TAKE CARE! Results of a month with Atkins.

On August 11, 2004 I published in this forum under the title "Help I
do not lose weight with Atkins", so whom want to know more antecedents
of my particular situation and how I made the diet go and read this
article. I now want to publish my outputs and make a warning of a
complication that I have had to be useful to the readers of this
forum.

To the end of a month of diet, in phase of induction (20 grams of
carbohydrates a day) I have succeeded in going down 3 kg. The loss of
weight was produced between the 3ª and 4ª week .

My analytic gave the following outputs:

Before beginning the diet At 30 days of diet Normal Value

Blood glucose 102 mg/dL 78.4 60 - 110
Blood urea nitrogen 17 mg]/dL 22 9 - 21
Creatinine 1.30 mg]/dL 1.68 0.60 - 1.20
Triglycerides 118 mg]/dL 218 60 - 165
Cholesterol 237 mg]/dL 221 120 - 200
Uric acid 6.7 mg]/dL 9.6 2.4 - 7.0
Proteins 7.2 g /dL 7.1 6.4 - 8.3
GOT 28 UI/L 27 0 - 36
GPT 24 UI/L 19 0 - 41
Gamma-GT 37 UI/L 31 1 - 50
Alkaline phosphatase 69 UI/L 63 40 - 100
LDH 332 UI/L 346 230 - 460
Total bilirubin 0.70 mg/dL 0.90 0.20 - 1.00
Sodium 138.0 mmol/L 143 135 - 145
Potassium 4.20 mmol/L 4.46 3.60 - 5.00
URINE all normal acetone +++ negative

One could appreciate that in 30 days of Atkins diet I had a low
increase of creatinine, and a very significant increase of
triglycerides and URIC ACID. Cholesterol didn't show a significative
change.

This morning I woke up with blurred vision, and I consulted to an
oculist in the hospital where I work, who after carrying out me a
careful examination, he observed that I had small micro crystals in
the vitreous humor of my eye, that probably are made from uric acid,
that besides settling in the articulations where there is sinovial
liquid, it could also make it in the internal liquids of the eye like
it is the vitreous humor.
Naturally he advised me to leave this diet.

A greeting for all.

Ah, my results have been the opposite. My HDL has increased, my TC/HDL
ratio is improved, my triglycerides have decreased, my fasting blood
glucose has decreased -- every blood measurement has gotten better. You
have a problem that's not associated with low carb. See the following
website:

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/e...cle/003476.htm

Greater-than-normal levels of uric acid (hyperuricemia) may indicate:
acidosis
alcoholism
diabetes
gout
hypoparathyroidism
lead poisoning
leukemia
nephrolithiasis
polycythemia vera
renal failure
toxemia of pregnancy
purine-rich diet
severe exercise

Thanks for sharing, but until a few dozen more people show up here who've
had the same thing happen to them in the same circumstances there's really
nothing that can be drawn from your experience. You can't be certain the
diet caused the problem. If it did it might simply be that the diet isn't
suitable for you individually, whereas others would have no such problem
with it.

Hope your eyes are better soon.

Please be advised that not every medical problem is caused by the Atkins
Diet, nor is every medical problem solved by the Atkins Diet. Good luck.

Your rise in triglycerides is very strange. Low-carb diets are
consistently proven to significantly lower TG levels (not only by
experience of almost everybody in this group, but by clinical trials).
