By "the book," do you mean Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution? He's the
one who mainly discusses ketosis, but there are many different
low-carb diet books out there, representing a number of different
perspectives. I personally recommend The Protein Power Lifeplan, by
Michael and Mary Dan Eades.

But to answer your question---go to the drugstore and get some ketone
test strips. Bayer makes some called Ketostix, but I've found there
are other, cheaper brands out there. Basically, you dip a test strip
in your urine, and if it turns color---anywhere from light pink to
dark purple---you are in ketosis.

If you are drinking a whole lot of water, and the ketones in your
urine are very diluted, the test strips may not register for you, so
they are not infallible. But if you're just getting started, it's
likely you're not yet drinking as much water as you should, so the
test strips will be a reliable guide.
