I pretty much stay away from Walmart as it is evil and kills small towns. I
live in a small town and since it came many older family owned stores have
closed. I try to always go to the smaller stores when possible and that
usually only amount to a walmart visit 1-2 times a year and not for
groceries. I've heard stories at least here locally about how poor their
fresh meat is, and a friend found cigarette ashes in her ground beef. :(

Yes, but then you have to shop at Wal-Mart.

That's what I was thinking.

Gads, I've never seen so many fat people all in one place as at a
Wal*mart parking lot on a Saturday morning.

There seems to be some correlation about people who make poor choices.

Henry Rollins tells some funny stories about shopping at Wal-Mart while
on tour. Good stuff.

I've shopped there in the past, but I ended up deciding that I couldn't
support them. I can afford to do my shopping elsewhere, so I do.

DH and I made the same decision last summer and haven't set foot in one
since.

I know there are people who feel like they can't afford to shop
elsewhere, but I knew I could.

I don't suppose they'll ever be brought down, but it's nice to know
there are other people out there who've made the decision not to support
it.

There's a decent sized contingent in town here that won't set foot in Wal
Mart. They're trying to build a supercenter that some people are opposed
to. Because it's such a small town/rural area we just stock up at Target
and other places when we're in larger cities. Plus the grocery stores are
really accomodating for bringing in new products.

There are many fat people at Walmart because, drumroll, there are many
fat people in general.

Despite income well into six figures, I buy most of my clothes and
minor household goods at walmart because they are cheap.

The quality of many of their products has declined over the last few
years, and I try to avoid those. Most of their food is so bad that I
do not want to eat it.

I refuse to make suboptimal choices because of political reasons,
though. My reasons for buying and not buying anything include quality,
selection and price, but not politics.

Based on the one time I went to Walmart years ago, I wouldn't give
them high marks on quality or selection. Didn't like it -- haven't
been back.

Not shopping at Wal Mart doesn't mean suboptimal choices at all. If
anything we don't deal with the cheaply made, almost completely disposable
garbage on their shelves.

You are being short-sighted. The high price of cheap goods means your
taxes go up because they offer so low a wage that many of their
employees are on welfare. The profits flow to out-of-town investors
rather than staying in the community. The small industries being put
out of business by their rapacious wholesale terms are legion in this
country. You're an inventor: do you have any idea how hard it is to get
a new product stocked on a wal*mart shelf? But the local hardware store
(if there was such a thing anymore) would happily carry it.

Wal*mart impoverishes this country from the foundation up.
