Here is my deal.

Lost all the weight I wanted to lose, thanks to low carb. Am below my goal
weight and trying to gain 4.5 pounds. The low carb WOE fills me up, but am
still losing weight on it. So how are people maintaining their goal weight
without losing too much? Do you add more calories? And maybe less exercise?
The best thing about low-carb was the no counting. Do I have to count
calories just to maintain my weight?

Sorry Rich,
I can't even imagine your difficulty here. I just started in August, after
being overweight for the past several years. I'm losing now, down 15 in the
past 30 days. This WOE is fairly easy once you get used to it and the
pounds are coming off slowly but surely. People are beginning to notice.
The thought hasn't even crossed my mind as to whether I will stop losing
once I reach my goal. That is a concept I just can't grasp at this time.
Maybe you're the "incredible shrinking man". :-)

Congrats on getting to your goal.
although i'm no where near.. i've heard others talk about adding carbs
back into their diet at 5-10g more per day for a week. til you find
the level where you neither gain nor lose.

I"m sure some of the more seasoned veterans will be more helpful.
what a wonderful accomplishment you have made for yourself.
Now if only I could have the same dilemna.. hehe.

Maintenance is definitely harder than I had expected... I fell about 5 lbs
below goal. I can't have any grains and *very* little fruit (one tiny
serving every few months, if that) due to physical sensitivities.
Currently, I'm eating a myriad of vegetables, nuts, legumes, good fats and
my weight *seems* to have stabilized. I don't restrict my portions or
count. I've thought about cutting back on exercise, but decided not to
since it makes me feel really energetic.

Have you tried introducing starchier vegetables like an occasional sweet
potato or some whole grains? Maybe some higher carb fruits like peaches or
apples? Legumes? Wild rice? These are acceptable in moderation during the
maintenance phase as long as you don't go over your CCLL. I don't know
about the calorie level question, but it wouldn't hurt to try raising it
for awhile to see.

Good luck.

Don't give up all the health benefits of exercise. Try adding some extra
veggies or low glycemic fruits like berries. YMMV but my body seems to have
determined for itself what goal should be. My loss rate has slowed to 3 lbs in
the last 10 months even though my carb intake has increased only 5 gm and my
calorie intake has remained stable.

Rich,

I've been maintaining for a few months. I've upped my carbs to an average of
between 60 and 70 gms a day but I count calories since for me as a middle
aged small sized lady calories do count. Beyond that the more carbs you
take in the more those calories seem to count.

In the past I maintained for almost 3 years and did not have any problem
with weight gain until I went over the 100 gm a day limit. At that point the
pounds come on with a vengeace. However I experimented with Carbohydrate
Addicts Diet and other plans in those days and did not gain weight with the
upped calories--though I didn't lose either.

Exactly how much exercise are you doing? if you are doing an "unreasonable"
amount, then you may want to drop down a bit. I've lost lots of weight
before by doing way too much exercise, an amount that I could not maintain
for the rest of my life, due to committments. however, if you are doing
"reasonable" amounts of exercise, including fun activities that involve
movement, then you should definite keep that up -- thrive to continue that
until you die. Hence, your most reasonable option seems to be to increase
carb intake slowly, which should bring some water back into your muscles.
Also, now would be a good time to consider adding some muscle mass back that
you may have lost while dieting (I don't remember your details). So a 6 to
8 pound bulking phase might be something you should consider, followed by
short weight loss phase to remove any extra fat you gained.

Atkins *usually* won't drive you below your real ideal weight. So
either you picked a goal that was too high and the process is still
pushing you towards what your body thinks it should be at, or you
are an exception to that trend.

My CCLL is 50ish and my CCLM is 100ish. So for the same calorie intake,
I'll lose at 40 grams daily, maintain at 80 and gain at 120. Note that
is for the same amount of calories, which means trading carbs for some
mixture of fat and protein.

If you're losing and you don't want to, add more carbs without
subtracting any fat or protein. Switch from brocolli to carrots,
double the brocolli, either way.
