Thanks for the tip! Actually, BalanceLog isn't that far off from what
caloriesperhour.com lists. The website has additional items though and
that is helpful :-)

Well, I have been riding outside six days per week. It's just my indoor
routine is new to me and I don't know how many calories are burned in
step aerobics or spin class or on the eliptical trainer versus riding my
bike. Hey, on Saturday I rode 38 miles outside and averaged 16.2 mph.
That's pretty good for me. I usually average closer to 15.5 mph.


You just need to track how many calories you eat, how much exercise
you are doing and at what intensity, and track how quickly you lose from
there. After a period of time, you'll get to know your body better, and you
can make adjustments in how you eat and your exercise routine.


Right. I just want to have an idea of what my indoor activities are
versus my outdoor ones so that I can be a bit more proactive (rather
than just reacting to the scale).

Roads. I don't currently own a mountain bike. In fact, I may upgrade
my road bike before getting a mountain bike.

It's been perfect
bike weather around here but I spent the weekend working around the house
instead of riding my bike :(

Calories burned during exercise
 
There is a "scientific" method - but it's a little involved. First,
find out your pulse rate when walking a 15 minute mile. If your
weight is around 150 pounds walking/jogging a mile should be about 100
calories. My pulse at 4 mph is 95, I then know exercise at a 95 pulse
rate = 100 calories every 15 minutes. At 5 mph my pulse is 115 -
that's 100 calories/12 minutes. At 6 mph my pulse is 135 - 100
calories/10 minutes. This method should be more accurate than the
machines at the gym which are notorius for exaggerating your calories
burned - exception - the treadmills are generally more accurate in
that regard.

Of course, exercise is good for many reasons. Stress reduction, toning,
general well being. :-)
