Don't go Atkins. Replace the sugar in your diet with things like

I recently posted here that one of my concerns with Atkins is
that 68% of those who tried it, in one clinical study, wound up
constipated. That is bad for long term health. Removing fiber
from the diet demonstrably leads to colo-rectal cancer, the
third leading cancer killer behind lung cancer and prostate cancer,
and therefore the #2 preventable killer cancer. I even have
anecdotal evidence, a friend of mine was unable to tolerate any
fiber in her diet and she died about 20 years ago from colo-rectal
cancer at the age of only about 40.

Do you have even the foggiest notion of what the Atkins plan entails?
Have you read even page one of the book? I ate more vegetables and fiber
last WEEK than I did in a month before Atkins.

Remember the scene in "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" where Jim Carrey's
character talks out of his ass? Well, you can turn around now, stop
speaking, and learn something, 'cause I'm only going to say this once.

Do you really think all we do is cut the fat off the bacon and slather
it in butter before eating it raw? God, how thick can you be? Cutting
the carbs to under 20g is simply a tool to jump-start the process for a
short time in the beginning. I'm somewhere around 60-70g a day and have
been for over a year.

Here's what I ate yesterday on the evil, death causing Atkins diet:
(around 50-60g carbs and maybe 1900 calories)

BREAKFAST (daily)
1 cup of full-fat yogurt (oh, God...my heart....aaacck)
26g of extra-fiber All-Bran
2 cups of home-roasted coffee with cream and Splenda
(14g carbs)

SNACK
2 oz of mozzarella cheese
(2g carbs)

LUNCH
Broccoli-slaw salad
100g broccoli-slaw (broccoli/a few carrots, red cabbage)
2 oz smoked ham
1 oz feta cheese
75g grape tomatoes
1 oz slivered almonds
2 T balsamic vinegar
curry powder, lemon grass, sea-salt
(15g carbs)

DINNER
Stir-Fry
2 T olive oil
175g chicken breast
100g broccoli (like it a lot)
75g mushrooms
1oz blue cheese
50g red pepper
50g grape tomatoes
(10g carbs)

1 glass white merlot (too sweet, but OK)
1 cup of home-roasted coffee with cream and Splenda
100g strawberries
(10g carbs)

This is some variation of what I eat daily. I don't eat grains, pasta,
sugar, potatoes, corn, sugary fruits like apples and bananas, and other
food bombs loaded with carbs. I also haven't had a slice of bacon in two
months and eat beef about once every two weeks. I eat salmon, chicken,
turkey, lamb, other fish, plus tons of vegetables (broccoli,
cauliflower, beans, lettuces, asparagus). I eat all types of berries and
melons. I love nuts but try to stay reasonable. Yes, I eat low-carb
treats sometimes because I have a sweet tooth, but the "side-effects"
(or would that be "rear effects") of sugar alcohols are fairly
self-regulating.

And a few little side-benefits of losing this weight? BP from 145/95 to
110/68. Resting pulse from 90 to 64. Fatty liver disease-gone. Joint
pain-gone. Snoring-gone. Acid-reflux disease-gone. Cholesterol-normal.
Clothes-they fit. Food bills-lower, since I'm not buying crap four
nights a week after dinner.

Please... I would never deride your decision to go low-fat if it works
for you, so don't even begin to think you know the first damn thing
about what low-carb really is. How about this....when the mass media
gets it right the first time about low-carb, I'll let you know, and THEN
you can draw conclusions based on what Oprah said yesterday.

BTW....I lost 110 pounds on Atkins and have kept it off for 13 months,
so thanks for playing.
