and I'm not too crazy about having real ice in the car. Hmmm...maybe ice in zip
lock bags could work - does anyone have any experience with that? I want to
avoid leaks in my brandy-new car!

How about lining your cooler with a large plastic garbage bag, or even
two garbage bags to have even more protection from leaks? Then, put
your food and ice inside the bags...just a thought.

Get a cooler that's small enough to fit on the floor in back, so if it
does leak, it won't be leaking on the seats, it'll be leaking on the
carpeting or floor mats. If it's leaking, it's only water coming
out...it'll dry.

Many larger hard-sided coolers have a spigot for draining. I think
that's a leak waiting to happen. It's convenient for draining out the
melt but...I'd rather get a cooler that's entirely one solid piece of
plastic, no outlet for leaks and just pour off the melt from the top.
