I passed the very first "test" of my new, healthier lifestyle. I went to a
family get-together at my father's home. These folks always put out a huge
spread of food and plenty of beer. In the past I would always end up eating
too much and feeling guilty about it.

This time I planned ahead. I knew I would want to eat a few snacks and have
a couple of beers, so I ate light yesterday and this morning. I had two
Corona Lights and a small plate of spaghetti with a salad on the side. When
I was finished eating, I threw the plate away and told myself I was
finished. I was tempted to go back for more but I resisted and came away
feeling quite proud of myself (and not weighed down by that overstuffed
feeling).

I had to endure a few rounds of "are you sure you had enough?" and "you
can't be finished already!" but I ate a healthy amount and didn't feel
deprived.

When I came home I exercised as usual, although it felt a little more
difficult (I attribute that to the beers and being tuckered out).

All in all, it was a good day.

Excellent! That's how I like to handle things like this -- take some
of what I enjoy but eat only as much as I need.
