I believe at on time it was common for people in the services to buy a
house and let it out until they left the services.
There were I believe special tax and letting law to allow this to work, i.e.
no capital gains tax liability as it was not a primary residence and tenents
could be more easily evicted than was typical for the period.


If you are in a convenient area it may be worth letting your house to the
US military service. They will guarantee to get out when you want it back -
or used to, anyway. Our neighbours did this and the tenants moved out
immediately for short-term accomodation when they wanted the house back
although the tenants only had a few weeks more they had wanted to stay
anyway.
