This is the first time I've tried the calorie counting method in
conjunction with the Atkins Diet. It's working quite well.
Yes, I have to do that too. It does work well.

Same here. I'm losing much more steadily (50 pounds in the last 5
months) since I switched from Atkins to a South Beach type diet where
I'm eating less (calorie-dense) saturated fat, more low-glycemic carbs
and consequently fewer overall calories.

You're just eating fewer calories overall. The amount of fat from
saturated fat has nothing to do with it. Realize also that such items
like steaks contain a great deal of monounsaturated fat. So, to single
out saturated fat instead of all fat or more importantly calories is not
correct. Furthermore, Atkins by definition contains only low-glycemic
carbs. The South Beach diet in no way is better than Atkins in this
regards.
The conclusion: you're eating fewer calories.
