Same here. I'm losing much more steadily (50 pounds in the last 5
months) since I switched from Atkins to a South Beach type diet where
I'm eating less (calorie-dense) saturated fat, more low-glycemic carbs
and consequently fewer overall calories.

Of course it does! I don't believe that saturated fat is inherently
"evil," however; it's a cold hard fact that saturated fats are the
most calorie-dense foods that we eat, and by reducing them I have cut
back on overall calories.

I've been a strong supporter of the Atkins plan for years, and still
recommend it to people I know. But after years I discovered that it
is simply not what is best for me. We all have different genetics and
metabolisms, and what may be right for you is not necessarily right
for everyone else. That's where he phrase "YMMV" comse in to play. It
took a mild heart attack and angioplasty with stent insertions last
October for me do make a change. While still sticking to a
controlled-carb eating plan, I've increased "good" (low-clycemic)
carbs and decreased the saturated fats while still maintaining a good
protein and fat-to-carb ratio. I posted the results of my bloodwork
here since I made the change, and there's no need to continue doing
it. But my triglycerides which were dangerously high (650+ at one
point, and 350 five months ago) were 117 last month. There is no
arguing with that number. I don't plan on having another heart attack
anytime soon.

Realize also that such items like steaks contain a great deal of monounsaturated fat. So, to single
out saturated fat instead of all fat or more importantly calories is not
correct.


Furthermore, Atkins by definition contains only low-glycemic
carbs. The South Beach diet in no way is better than Atkins in this
regards.


Yes in my case, a SOuth-Beach type diet is better. I was eating
absoultely no grains or fruit on Atkins, now I have added whole-grain
cereals and a few other previously forbidden complex-carbohydrate
fruits and vegetables to my diet, increasing my overall net carb
intake to around 100g per day

Why is it so important to you that everyone else follow exactly the
diet plan that you are? I have been involved in low carb eating for
nine years, have been a huge fan of the Atkins plan, and have been
posting on this NG for eight. There is very little that you can tell
me that I have not made my own decisions about. I'm perfectly
capable of -- and far more qualified than you -- to decide what works
best for *me* to eat.

Also, I never said that I am following the South Beach diet; in fact,
I am not. After my angiooplast (I had on coronary artery 99% blocked
and qanother 85% blocked) I carefully studied my cardiologists'
recommendations and combined it with my years of experience with low
carb an The results have been spectacular, with 50 pounds lost in 5
months, and came up with an eating plan that works for me. The
results have been spectacular. HDL to LDL cholesterol ratio tripled,
total blood cholesterol 117 and triglycerides 117. I feel and look
great, my doctors are using me as an example for their other patients.
And you seem put out because I'm not following *your* plan? Eat all
the prok rinds and all the fat on your steak you like, I'm very happy
for you (seriously) if it works for you. For me the answer was
finding the right balance between carbs, fat and calories, and there
is no denying that it's working. My primary goal right now is heart
health, and the weight loss is almost a secondary bonus!

Oh yeah, to the extent that your reduction in calories from fat don't
equal the amount of calories you've cut, you're replacing these calories
from something, usually carbs. That might not be bad for some people, but
for those who are insulin resistant, it's not a good idea (low glycemic
carbs are still carbs and still raise blood sugar level).


Acgtually, I'm a T2 diabetic and my blood sugar is completely
controlled by my controlled-carb diet alone with no meds for it. My
HbA1C last month was 5.1.

It all goes back to "YMMV. I found what works best for *me.*
