Default OK, how about the 10 BEST foods!

Of course there is no such list, just as there is no worst list...but,
there are foods that almost nobody finds controversial. Here is my
list of the 10 best foods, along with why I think they are so good.

1) green beans: high protein, high fiber, low fat, low cal. 1 can (of
no-salt added gb's has 25 grams of fiber, 8 gms. protein, 70 calories,
and essentially no fat. As a percent of calories, the protein is very
high. They are inexpensive.

2) oatmeal: whole grain, nothing added except water in the rolling
process, high fiber (both soluble and insoluble kinds), good protein,
low cal, low fat, easy to prepare, cheap.

3) whole wheat bread: not "wheat bread" or contains "whole wheat"
which are misleading descriptions for breads with little whole wheat
and all the rest processed white flour. Whole grains are often
associated with longevity.

4) celery: boring, I know, but good fiber for the calories, very, very
low cal. and keeps your mouth busy. A staple diet food, cheap.

5-7) broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage: in no particular order... good
fiber for the calories, low cal.

8) tomatoes: good vit C, low cal, antioxidants.

9) potatoes: hey, an entire country (Ireland) seemed to survive on
these and almost nothing else for years during the great potato
famine. They even have adequate protein...provided you eat 13 pounds
of them a day. Cheap, easy, versatile.....but best all by
themselves....not fried, or anything added to them.

10) banana: good fiber, potassium, cheap.

I also like egg whites, not the yolk which is where all the fat is
located. An egg white has 15 cal, 3 gms. protein. It didn't make the
list because it is an animal based food thus eliminating it for
vegans. dkw
