The beauty of a laid back attitude toward food
I was cruising around YouTube, and ran across this football (soccer),
video. The ball boy is laying flat on his back, feet towards the field, and here comes a ball out of bounds. Ball boy doesn't move - not one inch. Just as the ball is about to pass over him completely, he quickly heads it right back to the field - all this, while still laying down flat on the sideline. He never moved, not even a hand or leg - just one nod of his head. (Search for "Laid back ball boy" video on YouTube if you want a laugh and a zen moment.) That's the kind of attitude that thin people have toward food - relaxed. No "gotta clean the plate because (starving kids in China, overzealous Mom), whatever. No incessant anxiety about every mouthful they eat, or any meal that gets unexpectedly delayed, or even skipped. We won't starve to death if we eat a meal an hour or two later, or leave a bit of uneaten food on our plate. Good eating habits at regular times are fine, but be relaxed enough to run the diet, and not let the diet run your life. When we obsess over every bite, and every pound, that's when the dangers of food disorders like anorexia/bulimia, become much more potent. In the rodeo of life, it's a lot easier to try to ride the bull, than to try and carry the bull on your back; even for just 8 seconds! And that's no bull. |
