Default Doughnuts (dumb question)

According to my CalorieKing book, a Plain Old Fashioned Cake donut from
Dunkin Donuts is 250 calories, while a Yeast Sugar Raised donut is 170
calories.

The cake donut has 15g of fat, while the raised one has 8.

Go figure...I would have thought it was the other way around.

Nope, yeast donuts are baked while cake donuts are deep fried. Personally,
if I'm going to splurge on that sort of thing, give me a chocolate-filled
croissant. : )

Sorry, all commercial donuts are fried unless otherwise described.

Boy, isn't that counterintuitive!

And it isn't true. Doughnuts are fried. Yeast or raised donuts are the
lighter ones and they're proofed to raise in a warming cabinet in most
doughnut shops. When they've raised enough, they're dumped into hot
oil to fry. Normal temp is 360F to 370F.

Cake doughnuts are finished in two main ways. They're usually based on
baking powder to get the small bit of raise they show. They can be
baked or fried. Baked ones are rare. There are yeast-leavened cake
doughnuts, but not very common.

There are home-use cake doughnut bakers that I've seen in stores but
never tried. They look like those little sandwich presses where the
top closes down over a measured amount of batter. The machine shapes
and bakes it.

I like to tell myself that an occasional plain cake doughnut can't be
all that bad, assuming it fits in my calorie count for the day -- but
I think I'm probably in denial. Is there a real difference,
healthwise, between a cake doughnut and a raised doughnut -- that is,
beyond the slight difference in calories? Or are they both equally bad
for you?

You might hate me for this... But I find irony in your posts... You're
obsessing about your poochy belly in one post and justifying eating
doughnuts in another.

Shoot me, but I don't think a doughnut is worth being concerned over if you
eat in moderation, and I don't think a poochy belly is that big of a deal if
you don't want to exercise and eat doughnuts too.

It's all about choices.

Of course it's ironic. The bottom line is that, like many (if not most)
people, my feelings are conflicted.

I think an occasional doughnut that keeps me well within my calorie
count for the day isn't likely a big component in me having a poochy
belly. Also, as I've pointed out, I have started doing some exercising.
I just was curious if either of the types of doughnuts was healthier
than the other. I've pretty much decided, from the responses I've
gotten, that I need to add BOTH KINDS of doughnuts to my "generally
don't eat" list. Of course, they were already there...but this week I
made a couple of exceptions, and I'll plan to do that much less
frequently.

It's all about choices.

You'll get no argument from me on that.
