Default New Grapefruit Pill Diet

There was a news report on local TV last night. Doctors at Johns Hopkins have
found that a compound in grapefruit found mostly in the peel, keeps the body
from absorbing carbs. They made a pill using the complete grapefruit and gave
it to people in a study. The people lost a lot of weight. Go to:

www.wfts.com Look over to the right for Video Headlines Find
grapefruit diet pill and click on it When you get to the site look for box on
upper left, ABC Action News - you can click on it and get the actual newscasts.
Think its worthwhile....

Default New Grapefruit Pill Diet

What a great post Dorothy. I had never heard of it, and found the idea
really interesting.

I looked at the website with the news cast, and the company's website
www.getyourgrapefruit.com . There were some things that I woudl consider
negative about their approach. The study was done by Daryl Thompson of
Diaeta Corp. and the Florida Dept of Citrus, which would both have a large
stake in whatever profits were to come out of marketing ths product.
Essentially, becuase of their interest in seeing this study provide positive
results I would be be leary of their methods and motives. What I would
really like to see is a paper on the research with their results and
scientific analysis, especially the results seen by the group taking a
placebo pill.

I personally think its a great idea, and put more trust in it becase the
pill is 100% natural grapefruit, but I would like to see what other research
might be done to see if it is actually effective.

P.s. I make no claims of scientfic knowledge other than that I am a science
undergrad and we are always encouraged to take a critical look at research
methods and scientific papers, which is what i have tried to do here.

Any diet based on a "product" that must be purchased from the diet's
proponent is suspect. Yes, the Atkins Center sells products, but it's not
necessary to buy them to do the Atkins diet. But the "new" grapefruit pill
diet is -- according to their website -- a "reduced-fat, reduced-calorie
diet" (quote) -- plus the pill that you have to buy, of course -- from the
diet's inventor (Darryl Thompson). There is nothing low-carb about the diet
that Thompson proposes to go with his magic pill; it includes such things as
pasta, breads, fruits, and after the first four weeks even sugary desserts.
Sounds to me like another way for somebody to make some quick bucks off the
fat people desperate to lose weight.

I read the news article as well as Thompson's website
(http://www.getyourgrapefruit.com/); and it seems like just a new twist to
the same old same old. He invokes the name John Hopkins with absolutely no
supporting research statistics whatsoever in the printed article; it's an
age-old marketing ruse to gain credulity by association. Nor is there any
mention of what makes Mr. Thompson an expert in nutrition, other than the
fact that he is a "biochemical researcher" who "invented the grapefruit
capsule" and is selling this product. (I have a close friend who is a
biochemical researcher at the U of Redlands, CA, and I sure wouldn't take a
pill that she invented g). He is pushing the grapefruit as a sort of
nutritionally magical food which they now conveniently condense into a
capsule form that he sells. (A similar grapefuit thing was done about
20years ago and faded out as any other diet fad that didn't have much
merit.) I read the list of nutrients in his grapefruit capsule, and there
were absolutely no nutrients listed that I don't get already from the
healthy low-carb foods that I eat. Fortunately we don't *have* to buy
anything other than our food -- and we all have to eat anyway -- to lose
weight on our low-carb way of eating!

I don't really care if Thompson found a new way to make a buck off the
public; I *love* free enterprise! What bothers me though is that I saw no
mention in the article OR on his website of the fact that
grapefruit/grapefruit juice contains an enzyme that can be *extremely
dangerous* when taken in conjuction with a whole variety of medications,
including many common blood pressure medicines. You can do a simple web
search of "grapefruit+contraindications" to see this. Scary, that this guy
is pushing a concentrated grapefruit capsule to be taken 3 times a day
without any type of interaction warning other than a very tiny, well-hidden
disclaimer on the purchase page of of his website that says, "as with any
dietary supplement, please consult your physician before use."

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck ...

/soapbox
I'm not cynical by nature -- no, really! g But I'm realistic and like to
form my own opinions based on facts as I see 'em.

All this is, of course, IMHO and YMMV!

Default New Grapefruit Pill Diet

p.s. Don't rush out to buy the magic grapefruit weight loss pills just
yet!

By coincidence, here's an exerpt from an online article in today's (11/2/03)
St. Petersburg Times about the latest revival of the grapefruit diet. They
state that the John Hopkins study, funded by the citrus growers, was
unscientific and basically bogus !

------------------

Quote from article:

"The Web site says that "a prestigious East Coast University has released
the results of their study incorporating the new heart Healthy Florida
Grapefruit Diet."

That study, done for the Citrus Department by Johns Hopkins University in
Baltimore, wasn't particularly valuable in proving whether grapefruit works
as a weight-loss aid, said Ahrens. There was no control group of people who
didn't eat any grapefruit, he said. The study participants went on a
low-calorie diet and ate grapefruit, so it wasn't clear whether they lost
weight because of the low-calorie diet or because of the grapefruit. "

Here's a link to the whole article if anybody's interested:
