Paper: Diet guru Atkins qualified as obese

NEW YORK (AP) -- Dr. Robert Atkins, whose popular diet stresses protein-rich
meat and cheese over carbohydrates, weighed 258 pounds at his death and had
a history of heart disease, a newspaper reported Tuesday.

Atkins died last April at age 72 after being injured in a fall on an icy
street.

Before his death, he had suffered a heart attack, congestive heart failure
and hypertension, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing a report by the
city medical examiner.

At 258 pounds, the 6-foot-tall Atkins would have qualified as obese,
according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's body-mass
index calculator.

Diet is one potential factor in heart disease, but infections also can
contribute to it.

Stuart Trager, chairman of the Atkins Physicians Council in New York, told
the Journal that Atkins' heart disease stemmed from cardiomyopathy, a
condition thought to result from a viral infection.

Atkins' weight was due to bloating associated with his condition, and he had
been much slimmer during most of his life, Trager said.

Atkins widow outraged
The medical examiner's report was given to the Journal by the Physicians
Committee for Responsible Medicine, a group that advocates vegetarianism.
The medical examiner's office told the Journal that the report had been sent
to the group in error.

There was no immediate response Tuesday to a call seeking additional comment
from the medical examiner's office.

The diet guru's widow, Veronica Atkins, was outraged that the report had
been made public.

"I have been assured by my husband's physicians that my husband's health
problems late in life were completely unrelated to his diet or any diet,"
she told the Journal.

Last month, Veronica Atkins demanded an apology from Mayor Michael Bloomberg
after Bloomberg called her late husband "fat."

In April 2002, Atkins issued a statement saying he was recovering from
cardiac arrest related to a heart infection he had suffered from "for a few
years." He said it was "in no way related to diet."

We all heard about his heart attack when it happened. It was released
then that it was due to an infection. This is not news.

His wife says he had gained weight from bloating. I'm guessing this
was from the congestive heart failure. Those vegie nutjobs just want
more press. Makes me wonder what dog they have in the race and why
they try so hard to discredit meat eating.

Yea cause CNN always reports the truth right? The media is so trustworthy
right? They have absolutely no credibility with me. American news outlets
always did give me the willies. So frickin hyped. Give me a break.
Here is Veronica Atkins' comments. Frankly I'm with her.

Excuse me, my beef is not with CNN, I spoke to soon. But I still feel that
way about American news outlets.

This nonsense was put out by Physicians Committee for Responsible
Medicine. They are an anti-atkins animal rights group closely
connected to PETA.

Atkins heart problems are directly related to a viral infection. His
condition caused him to retain water.

Oh, bull****. People with congestive heart failure often bloat like
crazy, becoming hugely swollen. A former co-worker of mine was quite
large and, after his congestive heart condition was diagnosed, just
the water loss from the Lasix alone dropped 60 pounds off him.

And even with his (no diet-related!) health problems, Atkins still
lived to 73. That's pretty damn good -- nobody lives forever.

There you go. The PETA funded vegan idiots. They're lying again.

I don't go to that extreme, but he did endorse his low carb bars with
lying labels out of one side of his mouth and curse the other brands
with their lying labels out of the other side of his mouth. He very
likely made a million dollars doing so. With the income from his
previous books and the Atkins Center he no longer needed more money.

Consider: I bet the glucose drip while he was in a coma was high carb.
He went on low carb in the first place because he was prone to insulin
resistance. If he bloated like a blowfish, those drips likely caused
most of it.
