Default Rant: Between and rock and a hard place

That's how I feel. I haven't made any progress since December 29. I tried
upping calories to 9x my weight for a week and gained 2 pounds. I dropped
back down to 8x and lost one of the pounds. I'm having the same problem
with hair falling out (thank God my hair's always been too thick) and a bit
of pimples that Perple Girl is having. I tried doing more exercise and got
what's effectively a chemical burn from the sweat on my face so I cut the
cardio back by a 1/3. I've been doing a bit of weight traing with 5 lb
dumbbells, (bicep curls, bent arm rows, overhead tricep extensions, a
shoulder exercise and a chest one), two sets of 12 reps and my arms and
shoulders feel like I tried to pull up a tree by its roots! Aunt Flo should
have come on Sunday and she hasn't. My DH wants me to wait until he gets
off work and go work out with him. I'm afraid he'll come in and say, "The
kids were horrible. I'm exhausted. Cook for me, NOW." and I won't get to
work out at the gym today. (He's been teaching Earth Science at a junior
high, substituting for a lady who's on maternity leave so he's not used to
teaching full-time.) I suppose all I can do is hold on, do what I can, and
trust that things will sort out OK. Thanks for reading this.

Hang in there. Maybe someday our bodies will get the idea we're only
trying to make it healthier and cooperate. It's always soooo easy to gain
that weight, why should it be so damn hard to lose it G

Thanks. Our bodies thought we were being so nice to it when we fed it the
junk food so it could make such "gorgeous" fat and now we're being so mean
and trying to make it turn loose of it. :-)

Have you had any refeeds? I absolutely swear by them. And with your low
calorie intake, and imo it is pretty low, I think a refeed weekly would
really help. The reason is that after a period of time at a low calorie
intake, the body simply adjusts to that level and slows the metabolism. By
having a refeed, it stimulates your body in some way to keep the metabolism
up...

T - I feel for you!
I can tell you from personal experience that the hair/zits/monthly thing may
be signs of an "androgen" reaction as my gyn calls it. If you aren't
pregnant or perimenopausal then you may be working out too hard for the
calories/nutrition you are taking in leading to a hormone imbalance. This
may or may not not be the case with you, but it's something to look into.
BTW, I don't mean zits like a few here and there - my entire upper torso
front and back, neck, and hairline all broke out at once and I'm one of
those people who went through my entire adolescence with maybe 1 real zit.
Between a slight increase in calories, varying the intensity of workouts -
including adding more rest - and antibiotics, things are slowly getting back
to normal.

I never lose weight until after my period starts. In fact, my cycle is
that I lose weight for the first half of my cycle (starting with my
period) and gain or stay the same for hte second half. Two steps back,
one step forward, so to speak.

My DH wants me to wait until he gets
off work and go work out with him. I'm afraid he'll come in and say, "The

Then you say, "No, we're going to the gym. We both need it."

What else can you do besides be a restrained eater and exercise? I
mean, really, what else has a chance of working?

As for suggestions on the cooking - What works for me is, I cook extra
food on the weekends and portion it out for the week. That way if
someone says "i want to eat NOW" its as easy as opening the fridge,
grabbing a container and putting it in the microwave and dinner is
ready in about 10 mins.

Good idea. I was doing the same thing for a long time and then stopped. DH
and I discussed going back to the practice in order to accomodate any
additional time I need to work out during the week with the limited hours of
the facilities I use.

Why are you only eating 9x your weight? Why aren't you eating at 10x?

When was the last time you just "took a break" and stopped dieting for
a while, especially since you are on such a low cal woe with the heavy
exercise.

As for suggestions on the cooking - What works for me is, I cook extra
food on the weekends and portion it out for the week. That way if
someone says "i want to eat NOW" its as easy as opening the fridge,
grabbing a container and putting it in the microwave and dinner is

I gained weight at 10x and 9x, and found that I do lose at 8x. I switched
back to a more "balanced" diet and am not doing low carb just low calorie.
I think that my main problem at the moment is hormone-related. When Aunt
Flo comes and goes, I'll be back on track, I think/hope.

As for cooking extra, my husband won't eat leftovers and our fridge/freezer
section is too small to accomodate very much anyway. I tried cooking on
the once-month-and freeze plan once and neither one of us liked it very
well. It might have been the recipes I picked but DH makes his war-face
when I suggest trying it again.

I may be perimenopausal. I'm in my late forties. I tried for years to get
pregnant and couldn't. It's only a few zits fortunately and that may be a
result of the face creams I've been using to treat the after-effects of the
sweat burn. Aunt Flo has been rather erratic at times; her visits can be
anywhere from 26 to 36 days apart. I skipped a month altogether about a
year ago.

Yeah, it's aggravating. When I look at the chart I'm keeping with my loss
data (when and how much) I find pretty much the same situation but I drop a
pound the day my period starts and then another one and maybe two when she
leaves. Then if I'm lucky maybe lose another pound in the next week and
then I'm stuck Forget losing two pounds a week, I've got to accept that
that's not going to happen.
