Thank God
Between last April 15 and Oct I lost 100 lbs. (now holding 175lbs., 72 yrs
old) Just had a check up with a new Dr. last Wed. He was a welcome change. He had done his homework and was throughly conversant with all my past records and charts, before he even met me. (it took 16 days to get an appointment). .. . . .My b/p was 100/60 last Aug and 3 weeks ago it was 139/78. So I went to see him. I was not happy with this reading. I had been using salt wrecklessly since the Aug reading so I considered it the villian. New Dr. was not upset about the 139 reading and happy with the 78 reading. He informed me that an EKG from Mar 1, 2009, showed somewhere in the past that I had a slight heart attack (m/I). Date unk. New Dr. said my losing the weight was a great bonus for me. The 100 pound loss meant (he claimed) 430 fewer miles of blood vessels to carry the blood, and make the heart overwork. I sort of lucked out in a most unexpected way. New wardrobe and probably saved my life. Thank God. . .charlie. . . . . |

"Mary~~ Smokey" wrote in message ... Would you say what you did to lose it~~~~ **************** In the middle of Apr '09 I got assistance from a relative in FL who has been using WW for 8 years. Also a local Dr. type who had lost 40 pounds using WW. Neither to my knowledge ever joined a group (as I didn't either) but they got all the WW publications and books. I do recommend joining a group. .. . . . .I used the starting chart they provided (taking 0 zero points for exercise G) and ended up starting with 27 points based on my then weight (in hundreds) and 10 points (I believe it was for my age). So I had 38 daily points to use. I seldom ever used more than 24 points and I have yet to utilize the daily carry-over points. In fact the first 4 or 6 weeks it was only salads with ZERO FAT dressing and 2 slices of a 40 calorie bread (2 points-recomended by the local Dr). I toasted the slices and sprayed them with 'I Can't Believe It's Not Butter' (recommended here), and then cubed them into 1/2" x 1/2" squares (after liberal application of garlic powder and onion powder. I used the squares as croutons in my salad (including after the fat free dressing as they absorb all the dressing otherwise). Many days I actually did not eat. I did not religiously follow the WW rules as at the start I went more or less starvation and ate only when I could stand it no more. And then I only ate GOOD food. I tried to go Zero Fat but a lady here warned me that is not good. Skin and hair problems can develope if there is Zero Fat in a diet. .. . . .I must tell you that, at the start, I was very aware that there is a danger with WW. I found out on this site that WW is very effective and works great. But losing weight is not the primary purpose. Rather, it is developing a lifestyle of eating properly. Otherwise the records are full of those who had lost hugh amounts of weight (WW does truly work great) but did not develope the necessary 'lifestyle'. They soon replaced all the weight in a very short time and even ended up heavier than when they started. .. . . .I was aware that when I reached my predetermined weight I had go change from a reduction type living to a maintaining style diet. I called my relative in FL and he said to diet as I did before but dine out at least twice a week, ever keeping my eye on the morning scale. Less dining out if the weight starts to return. .. . . . As a note: Aug '09 I wanted to treat two visitors I had met during the summer, who were from Maine, to a hugh steak dinner (half cut tenderloin, 20 oz +/-) at a famous local Steak House. I fasted for 30 hours and when we dined ($93 tab -the tip) I ate everything but the tablecloth. Next moring I had lost another 1/2 pound. .. . . .From my observations WW is a vegetarian type diet. FAT is a no-no. All meat has fat. Alot. Fish usually are very fatty. The diet is open to meat once a day (6 oz- as the books say 'the size of a deck of card'), but I found that only teasing. About every other day I put a strip of crushed bacon (1 pt, highly nuked on a paper towel into my salad to prevent the hair-skin problems. .. . . . I believe it was Sep '09 before I had a piece of white bread, or a potatoe. The info I have is a 4 oz spud is not that bad. So I nuke one for 5 mins and then use Salsa / pepper on it (no salt). Pasta is out. I find that even the smallest amount of salt causes water retention and leg swelling, and thus weight gain. Not to mention the B/P. .. . . . I am not a biggy on fruits but I do put half a banana (1.5 points) in my morning cereal (zero fat Shredded Wheat). All my drinks are sugarless and 0 calorie diet types. I use celery with Salsa as a hunger stopper and I shred cabbage with my chinese cleaver and soak it in pepper and vinegar for a few days and munch on that too. I hate unflavored zero fat yogurt so I mix some strawberry yogurt with it and add in either blueberries or strawberrys. About 4 big TBS of each yogurt. Truthfully I haven't figured this conoctions point value. Usually 2 TBS of the fruit. I'm also into Zero Fat cottage cheese so a small quanity with 3 pineapple rings (diced) is another muncher I use. Never figured this one out either. .. . . .Bowel movements are very changed. I eat at least two dried prunes a day to help that. At first my stool reminded me of rabbit droppings. Evidently my intestines were doing everything possible to extract all energy from my intake as possible, so I had almost pellet type stools. I get a 98 percent fat free vegatarian chili from WalMart. . ( used the formula and figure it 8 points per can). I sometimes make that my primary meal along with .5 g fat crackers (3=1 point). This is a bowel stimulant and works better than medication. I tried using half a can and that was worse than none. So I use a full can and compensate elsewhere. Now, having that can of chili is next to an ex-meat/potatoe consumer like having that big steak. .. . . .The good thing is that one can eat anything they wish. But only in quanties that to me I find teasing. As a footnote: I take more pills than I ever had in my life. I take 40mg Lisinopril (prescription B/P med),Vit E (1), Vit C(2), Beta Carotine (1), Vit D (2), Calcium (2). ..my pharmacits recommed this to help eliviate shin 'charlie horses'. Fish Oil (1) new Dr rec, Potasium (1), Aspirin (1) 325 mg (new Dr cut me back from 2). I started this regime on my own at the onset as I realized that I was going to be missing many important elements on my spartan starting diet. .. . . . .Hope this is of some assistance to you. .. . . .charlie. |

Today was the day.
176.4 pounds today....reached my goal.
Took since the 1st of March to do it. I did not go over 178.6 in that time and I didn't bust my rear end trying to get to my 177 goal. But today was the day. Think I'll have some celery to celebrate.G It is disheartening to realize that I can't ever eat as I did. But it is so rewarding and healthy to be rid of 100 pounds of blubber. |
