Default Calories per minute burned

I've been using an elliptical trainer at night and been working up a pretty
good sweat.

What is the best workout that can be done in the house which will burn the
most calories per minute assuming it is done at the same intensity as any
other workout?

www.caloriesperhour.com is a good site for comparing calories burned
for different exercises.

What exercise equipment do you have available at home? I have a
treadmill and an indoor trainer for my bike. Here are some
comparisons for me using 30 minutes for the exercise time:

Walking at 4 mph - 164 calories
Running at 6 mph - 329 calories
Biking at 16 mph - 355 calories

Wow - why is it I feel that running burns more calories than biking. For
me, biking 16mph is a cake walk, where running for 30 mins even at 5mph
(which would essentially burn fewer than 329 cals) would have me totally
wiped out and I'd be exhausted.

I'd gather a guess that if I wore my HRM to do both for that period of time
it would be more calories running than biking.

I would think it makes a big difference how you're maintaining the 16 mph on
the bike. If it's fairly flat ground it's not too hard to maintain but if
it's rollers or hills you need to expend much more energy to do the 16.
It's fairly easy for me to maintain that speed on the local rail-to-trails
but would require twice as much effort from me to do it on hills. I agree
the HRM would probably give a much higher calorie count for the hilly 16
mph.

they say a person will burn an average of 100 calories per mile, whether
they walk it or run/jog it. Not at all true for me, and I'm guessing it has
something to do with being conditioned to that specific exercise. I burn
around 12 calories per minute and have slow 12 minute mile, so I burn almost
150 per mile.

Thanks for the link. At home, I've been using the Tony Little Gazelle
Platinum.

Hills? What are those? (nearest hill, other than an interstate overpass is
100 miles from my house).

It also depends on the bike as well. My old hybrid maxed out at 16mph.
(that would be in top gears, and I would be freespooling the peddles so I
couldn't peddle any faster). It was geared for mountain biking and hills.
My current mountain bike and hybrids are easy to maintain a consistent ride
speed of 15 - 18mph for long distances and they top out at 24+ (or I should
say, I max out my personal power at that speed).

um, what is a "slow 12 min mile"? 12 mins it 12 mins, no matter how you
time it. :-)
