As an adult, it's been fairly 'easy' to stay on track with a LC WOE because
I have choices about food during the work day. If I bring something from
home, I can refrigerate it in the office. If I forget, I can go out and
find something healthy and LC to get me through.

At my daughters school, there are no really healthy choices if she forgets
lunch (which has to be able to last several hours without refrigeration).
Oh, there is the standard school lunch food: pizzaburgers, nuggetized
chicken or fish (which aren't really chicken or fish), and other high carb,
sugar-laden, empty calorie treats. (Remember Tater Tots?) Or, get this...
there are Pizza Hut and Burger King mini restaurants in the school. And
they don't sell the full menu which would include a better choice of salads.
There are burgers and pizza's. Period. Then there are the soda machines
and snack machines which never offer anything healthy. Candy and chips.

Bad enough that we have allowed our children to become overweight by not
being smarter earlier and setting better examples for healthy eating habits.
(I know I am guilty!) But for the schools to contribute to the expanding
waistlines of our kids is unforgivable! I, for one, am going to start
pressing the local school board to see if there is some way to make changes
in the children's options. Doesn't have to be LC, but healthy!

Not only can't Johnny read, but he's getting fatter everyday. Let's help
our babies, and their babies to avoid this mess we have gotten ourselves
into. Fix it at home and fight it in schools.

Yes, this is a problem. My daughter brings her lunch from home
every day. BTW, I put those freezer pack in her lunch bag, and it
keeps the food cool. Haven't figured out how to pack anything but
cold food though, since she does not like really hot food, and it
is not safe to pack things in that in-between warm zone, where it
will sit for hours.

The problem is that the government wants low fat in schools. So, until
you can get the government out of schools, you're going to have low fat
(i.e., high sugar) in there.

Default The Future Health of Our Children

My sister was a diabetic, she got the diagnosis at age 5...
So my Mother never let EITHER ONE of us have
"fun food" growing up.
Ours was a house devoid of BooBerry and Lucky Charms cereals, Coca Cola,
Kool Aid, Pixy Sticks, Starbursts and Waffles with real butter and syrup.
All replaced with Kix, Fruit Cup, Margarine, Gelatine Desserts Made with
real orange juice and KNOX, Tab and Fresca. Even a packette of SweetNLow was
to last 2 beverages if we were to use it at all!
I didnt taste any fun food until I was 16!
My Mother didn't give us juice EVER in a sippy cup or bottle.
When i left my Mothers house at age 22 I then went hog wild for a short
period of time, then I got pregnant and it was McDonalds CITY for me!
I ate 2 eggs every morning and a whole pint of Ben and Jerrys EVERYNIGHT of
my pregnancy.
So much so that I bought stock in Ben and Jerrys for my sons future
portfolio...
I gained 80 pounds during my pregnancy and 30 MORE after I had him due to
unhappiness with my EX...
Isaw the wisdom in my Mothers thinking though and refused to let my son have
juice as a child.
No Juice, No Kool Aid, No Coke!
After my hard work of sugary beverage deflection for my son, my stupid ass
ex let him taste his Coke."Oh it wont hurt him"....
It took me a full 4 years to reverse his one time treat! After that one lil
sip he wanted it so much!!!
And my EX would give it to him.
Now that I no longer am around my EX, I try to be sensible yet not as
annoyingly cloistered culinarily about my
sons diet as my mom was about mine. If its soda, its Splenda Sweetened, if
its cake, its SweetNLow SF cakes or coffee cake or carrot (NO ICING) Fruit
Pies or Punkin Pie. Home made Iced Tea w/ Splenda, Double cheeseburgers at
Mickey-Dees to ensure hes getting enough protein.
I make my homemade chicken fried rice often so he gets green veggies. And I
have never allowed those nasty fruit roll ups fruit gushers, smarties, pixy
sticks or liquid candy or lollypops in my house. And all that are only
"treats".My son has never had his lips on a Poptart (aside from the time he
fell asleep on the floor reading a magazine and drooled on Britney Spears!)
Im appalled when I go into my local 7-11 or WaWa and see these fat kids come
in and buy a package of Twinkies or a Supersized candy bar and a Quart of
Gatorade and you hear them talking to each other about "getting back to the
house and finishing their video games" !!!!!
Its ridiculous!
UH EXCUSE ME??? GATORADES FOR ATHLETES, NOT FOR COUCH JOCKEYS!
Then I see partents buying their lil lil lil kids a whole 20 ounce soda!
WHY CAN'T SODA MAKERS MAKE LIL PONY SIZES SODAS FOR KIDS????
NONE OF US NEED 20 OUNCES OF SUGAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
