Third year blood results
Here are my blood results, after about three years of low carbing:
Total cholesterol 182md/dL LDL, calculated 105 HDL, calculated 47 Cholesterol/HDL ratio = 3.9 These results are much better than when I was on low fat (basically Pritikin), as my HDL on low fat was never above 40. However, I had high blood sugar and triglycerides, which is weird. The previous test (last year) showed normal blood sugar and low triglycerides. I think I had a drink or two the night before the test, although I did fast for about 8 hours before the test. -- Bob M remove ".x" to reply |

I always fast 12 hours before a test, not 8.. |

I definately notice a difference in blood levels if I hadn't fasted long enough. I agree it should definately be a 12 hr fast, and 10 hrs at minimum. I've always been told 12 is best. I think for triglycerides the fast needs to be in the range of 9 to 14 hours, and I think the alcohol can raise that number temporarily. -- No Husband Has Ever Been Shot While Doing The Dishes |

Did you have high blood sugar before? It's unmaginable to me that low-carbing could possibly raise your blood sugar or triglycerides. Taken by itself, my triglyceride level would seem to be a bit high now (about 232) , and I'm sure that some ignorant fools would scream that low-carb caused it. But considering that the day before I started my low-carb plan my triglyceride level was literally off the doctor's scale (it read "650+)," there has been an incredible improvement. My dhs ldl was 1300 one time it was checked... they never mentioned the
total score but he was on a heart attack watch in the hospital. His blood sugar machine said HI that day so he was brought into the hospital... Alcohol can raise triglycerides significantly.

I always fast 12 hours before a test, not 8.. I didn't get an HbA1C. My doctor also didn't give me a c-reactive protein test, which I believe is much more revealing of possible heart problems (as is high blood sugar) than cholesterol, which I think is meaningless. I'll ask for the HbA1C test next time and also fast longer. -- Bob M remove ".x" to reply |
