Help! Why do I feel irritable, poor concentration, and shaky/jittery during & shortly after eating?
Hey everyone, lately I've been experiencing really really weird
symptoms. Right after, and sometimes even during eating I experience symptoms typically associated with hypoglycemia. Symptoms include a feeling of nervousness/anxiousness, physical jitters & shakes, intolerance of/impatience with other people and other irritability symptoms, poor control over my muscles and body, and zero ability for concentration. I *hate* feeling this way, it feels like I'm coming undone almost. Now most people are probably thinking: "That sounds a lot like hypoglycemia. You probably waited too long to eat. Eat more frequently." That's what I thought too. So I started breaking apart my meals and eating before I actually physically felt hunger. It hasn't made a difference at all, no matter when I eat or how frequently, the "hypoglycemia" symptoms seem to be congruent mainly with the initiation of the eating act. While it is true waiting too long to eat will cause hypoglycemia, but now it seems that eating itself has been causing symptoms that mimic it as well. Another thought I had was that it might be crazy swings of blood sugar caused by caffeine usage. I cut out all caffeine from my diet, I drink only decaf soda. The only caffeine I take in is from green tea which I drink every other day. I still have the symptoms. What on earth could be causing this? It happens whether or not I eat a high carbish meal (15 grams) or a low carb meal (7 grams), the only constant seems to be eating itself. Even chewing sugarless gum will sometimes do it. Someone please tell me what on earth can be causing this. I don't know how to tailor my diet or lifestyle to avoid feeling this way. The symptoms say to me I am experiencing hypoglycemia, but logically how can eating something trigger an immediate DECREASE in sugar? It's getting to the point where I would rather do without food at all, or eat 1 meal a day rather than go all day feeling like a miserable quivering bowl of jelly. If I avoid eating, or eat small quantities of very low carb food (example: teaspoon of peanut butter) I can do without food for a very long time and experience only "hunger" (an annoying need to eat). But when I attempt to eat a balanced low carb meal I feel like I have hypoglycemia. I don't get it! One thing I was considering is it might be possible that my phase 1 insulin response is too high. Theoretically that could cause hypoglycemia upon eating if my meals aren't high enough carb to counter the excessive insulin produced. Is this even possible? If it is and if this is the problem, is this a sign of increasing insulin resistance? How do I deal with this problem? If anyone is curious, here is my info: My caloric intake averages are about 1250-1300 calories (This sound's low but it's really not, I believe my total metabolic rate is somewhere around only 1600-1700 calories). My percentages are about 56% fat, 16% carb (70 total, 50 net), and 27% protein. I am a 21 y/o female, I weigh about 135 lbs and am 5'5, and live a sedentary lifestyle. I take a multivitamin, multimineral, fish oil supplements, I try to eat well. Please help! |

You might want to check out the Carbohydrate Addict's Plan by the
Heller's. I wouldn't try to explain it, but it works quite well for some people who have hyperinsulinimia. I too have had similar symtoms. Help! Why do I feel irritable, poor concentration, and shaky/jittery during & shortly after eating?
I have experienced this. Here is what I've found. The problem is that upon
eating, your pancreas IMMEDIATELY dishes out the insulin, knowing food is coming. However, it takes a bit for the glucose to actually hit your bloodstream, so for about 20-30 minutes from your first bite until you start getting a little blood glucose, you feel icky. This is usually a symptom that you are eating too many carbs for your body to handle. Try cutting back to 30 net carbs per day and see how ya do. Also, you MUST exercise, mostly cardio, regularly to get over this condition. I don't know why, but it's the number one helper in my case. -- Peace, Pen -- Pawbreakers - The Candy for Cats! http://www.pawbreakers.com "aurora" wrote in message ... Too much protein and too few carbs. Check out Dr. Ornstein's book.

Help! Why do I feel irritable, poor concentration, and shaky/jittery during & shortly after eating?
Yes, I suspected it might be faulty phase one insulin response causing this.
The difference between my experience and yours is that while symptoms do tend to go away several minutes after eating (about a half hour, as you mention), they never totally go away and sometimes they return. I have recently been eating more carbs. This might be mucking up my phase one response. Maybe going back down to 40 or 30 carbs will help. I think I am going to go back down to 40 and see what happens. I know exercise does help with carb tolerance issues, I just hate it so much . I've recently been dabbling in weight resistance though, I heard that is supposed to be very good to improve glucose/sugar metabolism. Thank you for your post "Penelope Baker" wrote in message ... Do you have even the faintest idea of how the metabolism works?
Here's a clue for you: If you have carb tolerance problems (which you obviously do not), eating more carbs only makes that worse. When I was eating a high carb diet, I was very overweight, had zero enegy, brain fog, and my blood sugar & hypoglycemia symptoms were out of control. Out of curiosity, who is Ornstein? Thank you for the suggestion. I never really believed in the stuff written

He doesn't have a clue. He's an anti low carb nut who post an enormous amount
of one-liner responses in a low-carb group. Too much time in his hand I guess, I don't think he'd go very far in his research if he fritter away his time like this. aurora wrote: Do you have even the faintest idea of how the metabolism works? Hi,
On 7-Jun-2004, Ada Ma wrote: He doesn't have a clue. He's an anti low carb nut who post an enormous amount of one-liner responses in a low-carb group. He'll get tired and drift off eventually. Take care, Carmen |
