Exercise !Question.. again.. sorry all.
Another question for anyone who exercises regularly in the group.
I just was hoping to see what the general consensus is. I am going to the gym 3x a week.. and Loving it My question is... do any of you do more than that? What do you do on the In between days ... just rest or do you sneak in a walk or something else ? I was told that 48 hours is needed for a body to properly restore itself.. however when I started to train for running, I was told 24 hours is fine but to vary the workout. Just wondering if there is any benefit to pushing it more than that ? thanks ~Karen~ 225/194/fit and fab start Jan17/03 Started at the gym September/03 |

If you have the time, and want to, you can do a split routine where you work certain body parts on certain days. This still gives you between 48 and 72 hours rest for your muscles depending on how you split your routine. Here are a couple sites with routines and some good tips: http://www.stumptuous.com/weights.html http://www.davedraper.com Chris |

You can do aerobic exercise on days not at the gym (you can also consider HIIT is you are good at cardio). Just don't lift heavy stuff on off gym days. Also, do other stuff like walking as much as you can and walking up the stairs, etc. Listen to your body, too. I used to hit the weights 3 day a week, and do cardio for 2 hours everyday. When doing that, I'd get lots of colds and was frequently sick. I've since leanred that less is more. |

What do you do on the In between days ... just rest or do you sneak in a walk or something else ? I go to the gym for an hour six days a week. On three days I attend a cardio class and on the other three i have a personal trainer with whom I do load bearing exercise. Unfortunately I need the structure of classes and the trainer; I'm far too undisciplined to do it by myself; of course the big advantage of the trainer is not only that he knows the exercises to do but that he ensures good form all the time. |

Exercise !Question.. again.. sorry all.
For almost all types of exercise, the idea of hard days alternated with easy
days can be a pretty good rule of thumb. What makes something hard or easy will vary from person to person. And for weight training, its possible to alternate muscle groups, doing hard upper body one day, then hard legs the next for example. For endurance activities, the hard/easy principal still holds, but easy does not necessarily mean complete rest. I ride my bike for exercise. In the last two months I have missed two days. On a hard day, I might ride for 3+ hours, averaging 18 mph, or maybe for an hour at 20mph, with some intervals thrown in. I generally have 2-3 easy days a week, and an easy day means a 45-60 minute ride, at about 14-16 mph, keeping my pulse at about 120 or less. Duffy "krtyrrell" wrote in message ... Just wondering if there is any benefit to pushing it more than that ? thanks ~Karen~ 225/194/fit and fab start Jan17/03 Started at the gym September/03 I've been working out at Curves, and they told me that if I want to work out every day, I should go easier on the weight machines and harder on the aerobic platforms every other day, to give my muscles time to recover. Part of me thinks this makes sense, but part of me thinks it's crap, since I know some people with pretty physical jobs who do them every day and are in great shape. So far I've been sticking to the 3 days a week thing, but on my days off from working out I do try to get _some_ physical activity in. I play chase with my cat every night, I mow the lawn once a week, I used to go bowling once a week and I'm going to take that up again soon, I go for walks during breaks at work, just little things like that. -- -Michelle Levin (Luna) http://www.mindspring.com/~lunachick http://www.mindspring.com/~designbyluna |

I am going to the gym 3x a week.. and Loving it My question is... do any of you do more than that? What do you do on the In between days ... just rest or do you sneak in a walk or something else ? If you're doing weights 3x/week, then there is no problem with doing other forms of exercise on the other days. I do weights 3x/week, and also do yoga and pilates 1x/week each, tai chi 2-3x/week (depending on my other classes), and 0-2x/week I use a treadmill or go to the pool and swim or water jog. I also used to do African and Middle Eastern Dance. A typical week might look like this: Sun: tai chi, African Dance M: weights, yoga Tu: treadmill or pool, MED W: weights, tai chi Th: treadmill or pool, pilates Fri: weights Sat: treadmill or pool Of course, I have no problems skipping a day or a particular workout if I just don't feel up to it (except for weights, yoga, and pilates. I always go to those). I was told a well-rounded exercise program should include strength-building, increasing aerobic capacity, and improving balance and flexibility. Curves workouts meet strength-building and increasing aerobic capacity and running will definitely improve aerobic capacity, but there's not much to improve balance and flexibility. You might want to try adding something there to meet those needs. I was told that 48 hours is needed for a body to properly restore itself.. however when I started to train for running, I was told 24 hours is fine but to vary the workout. A 48-hour rest is necessary for muscle groups when weight training, but not necessarily for other types of exercise. Weight training causes tiny tears in the muscle and the 48-hours is the recommended healing time. Healing=increased strength. Running is the same--24-hours is needed for healing. Most of the "learn to run" programs I've looked at (and the learn to walk program at the Running Room) have running/walking specific training 3-4x/week, and cross-training on the other days. Most also try to include one day of rest/week. Just wondering if there is any benefit to pushing it more than that ? Increased physical health as well as psychological health. But overtraining is as bad as undertraining and can lead to injuries or mental/physical fatigue. Try adding another day of something you enjoy or think you might enjoy. If that goes well, add another day of something else or the same thing, and so on. Whatever you feel comfortable with is what works for you, and you'll know when you've acheived a comfortable exercise routine for you :-). rona -- ***For e-mail, replace .com with .ca Sorry for the inconvenience!*** |

Exercise !Question.. again.. sorry all.
I lift weights 6 days a week for about an hour a day, but I don't do any
cardio to speak of. I almost never get sick. Having said that though, I would also say that there are too many variables for a true correlation. Intensity is a huge subject. -- JC Lyle's New Ultimate Diet "1. eat less you fat **** 2. exercise more you fat ****" "krtyrrell" wrote in message ...
