Default alcohol calories

How many here have experience trying to lose weight while not cutting out
alcohol entirely? I'm counting calories and sticking to 800-1000 calories
less than what I should be burning daily, but I do enjoy my glass or two of
wine in the evening. Of course, I'm including these calories in my totals,
but do alcohol calories affect you differently than common food calories? I
eat supper about 3-4 hours before bedtime, but I sometimes have a drink
close to bedtime. Would this be a problem if my total calories are within
range?

Of the four energy nutrients, alcohol is the second most fattening. Whereas
a gram of carbohydrate or protein provides four calories, a gram of alcohol
provides seven--not far from the nine calories provided by a gram of fat.

I allow myself one alcoholic beverage a day and incorporate it into my
calorie count. I am on maintenance now, but I did the same when I was
losing, and it did not affect my loss adversly.

Just watch out for the nibbles that tend to "go with" drinking. I tend
to have my drink with dinner, and so avoid any "cravings."

Hi William,

I drink wine. I simply incorporate my glass of wine in my calories for
the day. I don't get munchies or whatever from it. I just enjoy a
glass of wine with the hubby after work before dinner. YMMV.

I've lost 124 lbs. without cutting out alcohol entirely. I am very
interested in wine and belong to several wine organizations, and
attend tastings often. I go through phases where I have a glass of
wine most evenings, though I haven't been doing that lately. (No
diet-related reason.) I'd say lately I've been drinking wine on the
average of 2-3 times a week.

Probably the main issue with alcohol that I'm aware of is that it can
lower your resolve to eat healthily. I believe the body treats
alcohol calories somewhat differently, in that I think they cannot be
stored as fat. But this doesn't mean they don't count, since the body
will use them for energy instead of other sources that will instead be
stored as fat. (Please don't take this as gospel; it's just something
I've read.)

Anyway, I'm just a one-data-point illustration that significant weight
loss is possible without dropping alcohol.

I agree. I have lost 80 lbs since Feb. and have not cut out my daily Scotch
and soda or Martini's. I do exercise quite a bit though. YMMV
