Default Attn - Jenny - off BP meds

I was googling for information relating to stopping of blood pressure
medication. A few of your old posts came up - so I thought maybe you might
have some insight.
In cooperation with my doctor, after losing 80 lbs, we are seeing if I can
get off of the BP meds (I take 5mg Altace). I have been completely off for
4 days. I stepped on the scale this AM and have GAINED 8½ pounds.
Obviously, a water weight gain. I talked to my pharmacist first (also my
brother) and he said it was a reaction of my kidneys retaining water from
stopping the BP meds. I called the doctor and they put me on lasix for 2
days to see if that does the trick.
Didn't you have a similar experience?? And if so, what was the outcome??
TIA for any assistance!

Peggy,

First of all, congratulations on losing so much weight!

I didn't undergo a dramatic water weight regain when I stopped the Diovan.
But I was taking a small dose.

What ended up happening was that I felt really good for about two weeks as
my blood pressure came up to normal. Unfortunately, by the third week it
started hitting high normal. At my doctor's suggestion, I've gone back to
taking one pill every 2 or 3 days. Any more frequently, my blood pressure
goes back down to 87/60, but any less, and it goes up to 135/85.

If the lasix doesn't work, perhaps you can taper off more slowly--take one
every other day for a few weeks, and then every two days and see how low you
can get. If your pills can be split (Diovan can't) you might half your dose
every day for a while and see how that goes.

Cubit,

135/85 is no longer considered normal for people with diabetes. The
guidelines were revised down a couple years ago. 120/80 is the top of normal
now. I try to stay around 110/75.
http://www.cnn.com/HEALTH/library/HI/00032.html

I have a history of having my blood pressure rapidly deteriorate from 135/85
to 180/105 for no reason that anyone can identify. The second time it
happened they ran every test possible including cortisol levels, an MRI and
nuclear kidney scans. So keeping my blood pressure as normal as possible is
a priority. I have two grandparents who died of kidney disease, one
definitely blood pressure related.
