Update: Senate Health Hearing Monday on Bill to Ban Aspartame;
How to Testify

I hope indeed I pray you will forward this widely, so that victims
and physicians in Hawaii can know about this and come forward
with their testimony to the Committee;
this is what I am sending out to friends and activists in Hawaii:

THIS AFTERNOON, Thursday, I am happy to report that
Sen. David Ige, Majority Floor Leader
and Chairman Hawaii Senate Health Committee,
came to realize the merit in scheduling a hearing
for Senate Bill 2506, to ban aspartame in Hawaii.

This was against all odds, because Rep. Josh Green, M.D.,
Chairman of the House Health Committee, "deferred"
hearing the bill, thus killing the House Bill,
carried by Rep. Mele Carroll.

Stephen Fox
Managing Editor, Santa Fe Sun News
;

These are the 5 members of the Hawaii Senate Health Committee
with their contact information. It is vital that physicians and
victims of
aspartame poisoning contact these five Senators as soon as possible
by email and by telephone,
as well as sending their official testimonial letters to:

;
It must say this at the top of the Email, in the subject:
SB2506 Ban Aspartame,
hearing in Senate Health, Room 16; 1:15 PM, 2/25

For those coming to testify in person, email to:
;

David Y. Ige, Chair
16th Senatorial District
Hawaii State Capitol, Room 215

David Ige currently represents Hawaii's 16th Senatorial District:
Aiea, Aiea Heights, Momilani, Newtown, Pacific Palisades,
Pearl City, Upper Pearlridge, Waiau and Waimalu.
David has dutiful represented his district as a
representative from 1986 to 1993 and a senator since 1994.

While working for GTE Hawaiian Tel, David took graduate courses
at the UH and earned a Masters of Business Administration degree
in Decision Sciences. In 1986, Hawaii Business Magazine named
David one of the university's Top Ten MBA Students.
Today, David is Project Manager/Engineer
at Robert A. Ige & Associates.

Education

As the father of three children, David is deeply concerned
with the future of our children's education.
In his first year as chair of the House Education Committee,
David introduced an omnibus education bill that gave schools
more authority and autonomy by emphasizing Children First.
David helped pass legislation that would allow fiscal flexibility,
ensure assessment and accountability,
encourage school innovation, and improve our school facilities.

In past sessions, David continued his efforts to restructure
our public school system with the passage of another omnibus
education bill. This bill supports school reforms by empowering
schools and making government agencies the supporting
framework for schools. It also allows voters to decide
if public schools should be governed by an appointed Board.
The bill also lets schools implement alternative administrative
and instructional programs.

Technology and Economic Development

As an engineer, David knows and understands the role
technology has in our lives and in the State's information
and telecommunications policies. David co-authored the
Hawaii Telecommunications and Information Industries Act
which established the State information network
and created the Hawaii Information Network Corporation.
He has also been at the center of Hawaii's efforts to diversify
its economy. He was responsible for establishing seed capital
and venture capital programs, software development initiatives,
and technology transfer programs.

Public Access and Legislative Reform

Like the rest of us, David is a concerned citizen.
That's why he worked on transforming the
Hawaii State Legislature to make government more accessible
and accountable. His efforts overhauled the legislative process
and created the Public Access Program. Today the Legislature
uses telecommunications technology such as fax,
video teleconferences, electronic town meetings, and more.
David also helped develop ACCESS, the State's first on-line
electronic information service. People are now able to instantly
access information on legislation from terminals
at public libraries and from their home computers.
Public hearings and floor debates are now televised
so voters know exactly where their legislators stand on issues.

President Clinton's
National Information Infrastructure Advisory Committee (NIIAC),
which launched the campaign to link the nation's schools, libraries
and rural communities to the Internet.
Her efforts in the technology arena resulted in the first
online access to legislative information, the nation's only
Public Access Room and Hawaii public schools' broadband
connectivity.

Senator Fukunaga has served in the State Senate since 1992,
and in the House of Representatives during four prior terms.

"Alcohol dehydrogenase ADH is required for the conversion of
methanol to formaldehyde (112).

ADH is not a common enzyme in the human body -- not many cells
in the human body contain this enzyme.

The human breast is one of the few organs in the body with a high
concentration of ADH (190b), and it is found there exclusively in the
mammary epithelial cells, the very cells known to transform into
adenocarcinoma (190c) (breast cancer).

The most recent breast cancer scientific literature implicates ADH
as perhaps having a pivotal role in the formation of breast cancer,
indicating a greater incidence of the disease in those
with higher levels of ADH activity in their breasts (190a)."

A bill, SB2506, to ban aspartame, was introduced by state
Senator J. Kalani English
of Hawaii's 6th district, including east and upcountry Maui.
He is chairman
of the Transportation and International Affairs Committee.
For the upcoming 2008 session, Senator English
has also been appointed Vice Chair of the newly created
Senate Committee on Agriculture and Hawaiian Affairs.

Senate sessions are in the capitol, Honolulu.

There are thousands of bills and resolutions submitted
each year to the Legislature.

Senator English introduced or cosigned 160 bills and
resolutions in the 2007 session.
Seventeen of those bills passed into law, four of which
Senator English introduced himself.

The status of SB 2506 in the Hawaii State Senate
is that it has been referred to the Senate's Health Committee.

Senate Bill 2506 introduced by Senator Kalani English,
and also signed by Senator Suzanne Chun Oakland,
as well as House Bill 2680,
sponsored by Representative Mele Carroll,
will move to ban aspartame from the State of Hawaii.

TWENTY-FOURTH LEGISLATURE, 2008
STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT relating to food.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE
OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature finds it is imperative for the public
health, safety and welfare to declare that aspartame
and its derivative compounds,
in all of their trade names, are poisonous and deleterious food
additives due to their neurotoxic and carcinogenic metabolites.

The legislature finds that federal authorities have not intended to or
expressed an intention to occupy and preempt areas of concern
regarding the prohibition of toxic, neurotoxic, carcinogenic,
poisonous or deleterious food additives,
and therefore the legislature may prohibit the sale of products
containing aspartame and its derivative compounds in order to
protect and ensure the public health, safety and welfare.....

Education:
2003: John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University
* Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government. As
the devolution of the Federal Government continues, senior officials
at the state and local levels are under more pressure than ever.
They are taking on increasingly complex challenges with fewer
resources, under a greater degree of scrutiny.
* The Senior Executives in State and Local Government program
provides training that helps officials assess the tasks they face in
managing today's results-driven government agencies.
In particular, the program provides an opportunity for them to:
o Develop new conceptual frameworks for addressing policy issues
o Explore the relationship between citizens and government

The Henry Toll Fellowship holds the national reputation of being the
most prestigious leadership development program for state

an intense desire to improve state government
and their effectiveness as public servants.
The Toll program brings the states' best and brightest
emerging leaders to Kentucky for an intensive five-day
"intellectual boot camp" to develop the next generation of leaders
from the three branches of state government.
