I bought a packet of this. It says zero carbs and 100% xylitol, all
natural, no artificial sweetners, no aspartame, sugar-free, and all that
jaz.

How does it compare with Atkins recommended Splenda in terms of whether
or not it is good for you? It tastes pretty much like real sugar.

Thanks,

Peter.

It is said to be fatal to dogs. Don't know about cats.

"All Natural" my be a come-on from the marketing department.

Remember that manyu fatal arsenic compounds are "all natural", as is
snake venom.

Google for it or sugar alcohol here, as that is what it is. All of
the sugar alcohols get at least partly metabolized, some more, some
less. Xylitol is one of the better ones and is less likely to impact
blood sugar levels. But like all sugar alcohols it can have some
gastrointestinal issues, at least for some people. The main advantage
to sugar alcohols is that unlike Splenda, they add some of the texture
and physical qualities of real sugar. Which is why they are used in
products like LC candy, bars, etc. I would not suggest using them as
a general purpose artificial sweetner.

From Wikiapedia

Properties

One teaspoon of xylitol contains 9.6 calories, as compared to one
teaspoon of sugar, which has 15 calories. Xylitol contains zero net
effective carbohydrates,[citation needed] whereas sugar contains 4 grams
per teaspoon. Xylitol has virtually no aftertaste, and is advertised as
"safe for diabetics and individuals with hyperglycemia". This is because
sugar-alcohols have less impact on a person's blood sugar than regular
sugars[4].

If you want not quite as many calories as sugar, perhaps xylitol will
meet your needs. You could call it a "half as sweet - sweetener".

And that just about everything is harmful if taken in large enough amounts,
salt, water......

Sugar alcohols are carbs--in fact, they're the perfect "carbohydrates"
if it would mean "carbosemiperhydrates".
