(tee, hee, hee) ... Are you a Summer or a Fall? :-)

Spring..........

Seriously though - On monday when the one woman at work complimented
me I was in an old pair of dockers (frumpy looking too) and a polo
shirt. I knew I'd be moving a bunch of computers and stuff that day
and wanted to dress in somehting that I didn't care if it got ripped
or ruined and was comfrotable. Frumpy, but comfy.

I had no idea that was how the Tanita worked! I get weighed on one every
week at my dietician's office and was getting disappointed with the BF%.
How high up on your body will it measure? To the belly button, ribs, etc???
Most of my weight is on my hips, butt and stomach....

Dispite this, for the past 2 weeks not a day has gone by that I
haven't gotten a comment about my weight. From the lack of tact
comments like "you've lost weight, what diet are you on now?" to the
"wow, you really are looking very fit lately". Even BF says he has
noticed a loss of fat in areas like my butt and thighs. His latest
compliment was something to the effect that as most women age, their
looks start to go along with them, but as I age, my looks just keep
getting better and better.
...[snip]
Thank you everyone for noticing, but honest, nothing has changed.

Jayjay, if they are noticing, then something *has* changed! All those

people wouldn't
be making it up. You're just too close to see it, so don't bother yourself

with
figuring out what happened -- just enjoy the fact that you are looking so

fit that
everyone can't help but comment!

BTW with the Tanita, my nutritionist explained that it sends the signal up

and down
just your lower body and doubles the number. If you carry your weight in

your lower
body it will show you a higher reading. That's how he explained the

discrepancy
between his professional bioimpedance machine (which hooks on to your foot

and to
your hand with electrodes, thereby measuring the upper and lower body

separately) and
my Tanita reading -- which is always much higher than his.

The "compliment" I hate hearing is that the extra weight doesn't look bad.

Wow, that's be awful! It means they noticed your weight and found it
startling enough to be noteworthy! In reality it just shows THEIR values
- nothing more - but it must be hard to hear.

Well, 15 pounds in a month is a LOT--it's definitely noteworthy. At least
people at work will probably stop leaving candy on my desk now, and I
doubht I'll ever hear another "what do you care--you're in shape--you can
eat what you want" comments (I obviously cannot).

Maybe it doesn't, but I feel gross, and I sure hate having undone a year's
worth of loss in a month (which I managed to do while running 7-12 miles
per day).

What a rotten month! Well, time to change something. You can do it,
Alison. Maybe your body has gotten used to running: go check out the
thread on changing cardio. Maybe you need to go back to food
logging. Maybe it's water weight! (Yeah, that's the ticket!)

Thanks so much for the support and kind words, Wendy. I'll take your
advice and read up on changing cardio, and will continue the food logging.
Nothing to do but get back on track with a vengeance; I may lose slowly,
but I am NOT going to gain another ounce! Easier said than done when one
is leaving in a day for a weeklong vacation in Las Vegas, buffet central
(souvernirs, anyone?), but I'll get through it.

Welcome back. Be sure to killfile Mu as he seems to have some fantasy
about "Mt. Holyoke girls" right now.

Thanks again. It's good to be back and read so many success stories
(including your own--congrats on the continued amazing progress!).

-Alison, off to have a naked pillow fight like a good all-women's-college
attendee and then a 6 mile run in a pair of stilettos (we all do, y'know)

Not me, I never run in stilettos. I do squats that way, though. :-)

Thanks for that note. That explains my discrepancy between the
caliper readings and the tanita. My bodyfat is truely in my lower
body. (thighs mainly). My upper body has a much lower bodyfat
ratio. The calipers put me closer to 15 - 17% (which I don't think
is accurate, but the majority of the readings are upper body) where as
the Tanita puts me between 25 - 27%. Then to read posts about all
the low 20% people (you, determined, beeswing, etc) its just weird.
I know I look good and look like someone w/ closer to 20% bf not 25%.

Hey, I'm 20% on my nutritionist's machine, not at home. I tend to do my

Tanita
reading in the morning (which I know is the wrong approach) -- so I'll

have to try it
tonight and see what it says -- but I promise you it's nowhere near 20%.

And perhaps
my nutritionist's machine isn't exactly right about the 20% -- but I'm not

too
concerned about that. The thing I concentrate on is that I've been

measured on the
same machine for 18 visits, and have seen the number drop from 45.4% to

20.0% in that
time. I also wonder how the Tanita handles my excess skin issue -- is that

measured
as fat? Because I think the lowest I've ever seen on my Tanita (at night)

is 29%.
That's a big difference from 20%! When I was 75+ lbs. heavier, the

difference between
the two readings was smaller -- I think I was 49% at home (God that sounds

awful!) so
that was less than a 5% difference -- now it is more like a 10-15%

difference since I
actually saw 35% the other morning. (Again, I know I'm not supposed to

measure in the
morning because it will read higher.)

Mary

I actually prefer to measure in the morning because when I measure in the
evening I'm at 16-18% which just freaks me out too much. At least in the
morning I'm a more sane 23% lately. The measuring device at Curves only
does the upper body and that's what I've been relying on for the last 9
months. I figure consistency is more important than precision. Maybe I'm
wrong? What do you think? I am still pretty new to this and need to learn!

Jenn
