[sigh]

I've been putting it off, but, I knew it had to be done. I bought Halloween
candy today for the stink or tweeters. I won't even mention the kind of what
it is. What made me grab for my favorites? Five bag bags of the stuff.
Ummm... NO!

As far as I'm concerned, its just like beer to an alcoholic or cigarettes to
a smoker. That **** is calling my name. Maybe we should just have a beer
night for the kids or something. I'm pretty sure that, short of alcohol
poisoning, alcohol would be better for the kids than bags overflowing with
candy.

Next year, damnit, they get broccoli.

Miii--iike
(yes, darling, I'm coming. No, wait, no! Uh uh.)

Maybe getting some kind of small toys instead? I don't know, at my
school I've seen so much sugar passing around, but it makes me
nauseous to think about it. There must be better viable
alternatives....pencils? artichoke hearts? ipods?

Now why are you buying candy? Candy is not low carb.

It's very wrong to give poison to someone else's kids.

I just imagined the face of the kid you will give broccoli and beef to.

There's another alternative: give them sugar-free candy. Very funny too,
if you know what I mean. A bit expensive though, but the priceless
revenge while saving children's blood sugar level.

Oh for goodness sake, it's Halloween! Yes, I know there's an epidemic
of childhood obesity, but it's not caused by Halloween, it's caused by a
long term lifestyle of junk food and inactivity.

Sweets can have a reasonable place in a child's life, as a special
treat, without leading to obesity. A slice of cake on your birthday is
not the same as cake for snack after school every day. Grandma's apple
pie on Thanksgiving is not the same as McDonald's apple pie with lunch
every day. Candy on Halloween is not the same as candy ready and
available all year round whenever a child gets whiny.

I'm definitely buying candy today to give out to the kids, stuff they
like that I don't. Gummy worms and Reese's. Any leftovers go to the
teachers' lounge at work tomorrow.

Oh for goodness sake, it's Halloween!

Yeah, Halloween isn't the problem. However, please tell me how Halloween
doesn't reinforce the issue? Kids get piles of candy to pig out on...are
you kidding? Your entire message below seem to be as if you've dropped in a
vacuum and have forgotten where these kids live. I'd agree with you 100% if
candy were only an occasional treat, but it's the rule not the exception,
for many of these kids. That's right...take the leftovers to work to fatten
up the crowd there.

Moreover, why do single people how have no kids buy into Halloween anyway.
I do get it for parents, though.

Single LCers buying candy for Halloween sounds like a good reason to slide
off the wagon, to me. Or to help fatten up everyone else. hehe.

I guess the offical "let's put more junk in the trunk" season is started. Oh
joy!

If you can't handle having the stuff around, then don't participate in
giving it out.

Especially if you have moral issues with it.

I don't know a good solution for taking egg off your house. I think
you have to
get to it fast or the protein sets up pretty fast. I'm just saying, if
you're
going to give broccoli, you might want to prepare for the
consequences.

How bout quarters? Maybe that's like giving money to the alcoholic bum
outside the liquor store.

In these parts, you just leave your porch lights off and the kids pass by.

I don't know where the compromise is. Before 20 ounce full sugar
sodas
it wasn't bad to give candy that wasn't otherwise eaten. Now, I have
a
harder time.

Very small kids love colorful balloons. They'll even take them
voluntarily over quarters. Last year we got a big cluster of helium
balloons to give to the younger kids. Above some age it was
quarters, and for close by neighbors dollars.

Halloween is a harvest festival. Yet I haven't been to an arts and
crafts show with corn dollies for several years. Urbanite that I
am, to me harvest is about going to the grocery store ...
