New Coke was not a failure. It was an absolute success in all ways.

Okay, since I was the one who said it was a flop, I'll bite. Can you
explain this? The only postulate I can think of is that New Coke was a
marketing scheme by Coca-Cola to generate interest in its "Classic" product
thereby boosting sales. If that were the case, I guess I'd like to see a
rundown of the cost and sales numbers to determine whether it worked. At
any rate, I'd like to hear more about what you mean.

I don't have a rundown, but it was pretty obvious. They got huge amounts of
publicity over it, got to call their product "classic" and have kept the #1
spot in the market ever since.

Have they? Did they not have the #1 spot before? At any rate, here is an
interesting page, citing a bunch of sources, that concludes that New Coke
was not an underhanded marketing gimmick planned to fail, but rather an
honest miscalculation by the company. I don't know which version is true -
I have to admit that I don't care all that much - but it is an interesting
read. http://www.snopes.com/cokelore/newcoke.asp

Reports I read at the time in various business publications were
consistent with what's on this link. That is, that Coke actually
expected new Coke to be accepted, it wasn't some grand marketing
scheme, and it did in fact fail miserably.
