Looking for an accurate pedometer
I want to start measuring how far I'm walking and would like to
buy a pedometer. Someone said they were giving cheap ones away with the salads at McDonalds. But I'd like the brand name of some good quality pedometers that people are actually using and getting accurate measures out of. Thanks. Seems to work, but I never tested to see how accurate it is. -- If a cow laughed real hard, would milk come out her nose? Now playing: "Black Sabbath - All Moving Parts (Stand Still)" |

Looking for an accurate pedometer
Lee,
I was using the stepometer from McDonald's and it was not accurate at all. I ended up looking at reviews and I bought one of the ones that were top rated for accuracy. I got it on line he http://www.stepintohealth.com/ I have counted out 100 steps many times to check the accuracy and it counts perfectly every time. I got the one that just counts steps but they do have ones that count mileage and calories. Susie I want to start measuring how far I'm walking and would like to buy a pedometer. I got a couple of cheap Healthometer pedometers for free in Slimfast handout packets that were in all the shopping bags at a local healthfood store a few weeks ago. I haven't tried one out, but if you want one of these, Lee, I'd be happy to mail it to you. Like Debbie, I couldn't find any reasonably accurate ones at the sporting goods store (see below), when I set them to count paces. Debbie Cusick wrote: Good luck, and if you find one let me know. :-) I tried pedometers a few years ago. I had 4-5 that I bought from Sears, a camping store, a sporting good store, another 5-6 that I bought from LL Bean. Some were fancy and expensive, some were less so. Every single one had to be returned because not *one single one* was accurate. I tried several brands of pedometer at the local sporting goods mega-store several years ago, during my weight loss period. At the time, my belly was in a particularly jiggly period, and hanging them from my waistband and counting 50 paces, they all measured 70 to 90 paces, I assume from the fat taking extra bounces. If I clipped them a little higher, in a spot that wasn't jiggly, they all measured between 30 and 40 paces when I counted 50, so I didn't buy any of them. -- jamie ) "There's a seeker born every minute." |

I've tried numerous pedometers we've gotten as freebies at various places and none of them has worked properly. I purchased one at Sports Authority for about $10-15 and it was dead-on accurate. It didn't measure steps, just mileage, and it gave the same mileage results as my treadmill. -- Best wishes, Louise Type 2 since 2000 Controlling by exercise and diet |

Looking for an accurate pedometer
The McDonalds meter should be OK just to count steps. It is a pretty cheap
unit though. It doesn't do distance as there is no way to set your stride. The instructions also say you better stay on a flat and level surface - the unit will miss-count if you walk on uneven surfaces, stairs, hill, etc. :-) A while back, there was a PBS show called "Americas Walking". That's where I first head about the 10000 steps program. After studying lots of pedometers, I settled on one from Oregon Scientific. This one has a built in Pulse Meter and a clock. Other models had other features like an AM/FM radio, etc. The GPS solution is interesting. It may tell you how many miles you went, but not the number of steps. Just depends on what you want to count. What I really like is a count-down timer. I set it for some time that is half the time I want to spend walking, and start walking away from home (or whatever starting point). When the alarm goes off, I know when to turn around and head back. Looking for an accurate pedometer
Teeb wrote:
really don't see how any of them could be accurate given that a *step* is very individualized, unlike car odometers... Well the theory is that they have to be "set". You are supposed to walk over a measured distance and count the number of steps you take. You then devide the number of steps you took into the distance you covered, and what you get is supposed to be *your* average stride. You then program the pedometer for the number of inches that your average step is, and it is then supposed to measure your strides using this value. Of course if you deliberately take especially long or short steps you will throw it off but, like jamie, even taking as close to a standard stride as I could manage I got readings all over the map. -- Debbie |
