Anyone have any experience with raw?
I'm not going whole-hog raw-foodist, but some of the things that two
of my friends (who are totally dedicated raw-vegans) make, have sounded totally mouth-watering. I've been looking for an alternative to eating meat every single meal of every single day, and am thinking of having maybe one raw meal a day (for lunch for example)... some of the stuff looks low enough carb if I'm careful. |

Yes! I have been trying to fit in more seafood lately, for lower cholesterol, and though I made some really tasty recipes, I could see that we were all going to get really tired of fish, really soon. So yesterday, I bought some sashimi grade swordfish, sliced it thin and served it with soy sauce, wasabi, sliced avocado, and a bit of pickled ginger (skip that to be purely low-carb). Everybody really liked it! Hmmm, but maybe this wasn't the kind of "raw" you had in mind. LOL. Anyway, if you are tired of meat for every meal, try my favorite alternative breakfast: Mix together: 1 Tbsp protein powder 1 Tbsp flax seed meal 1 Tbsp wheat bran 1 Tbsp oat bran 2 Tbsp almond meal 2 Tbsp Soy Nutlettes (use Grapenuts if you can't find the Nutlettes, or skip it entirely) use whatever kind of milk you allow yourself, and sprinkle with whatever fruit you allow. I use frozen blueberries most of the time, but when I am allowing more carbs, I love adding some mango. What kinds of recipes have your friends been telling you about? Now I'm curious. Rebecca |

Be careful. Many carby foods are poisonous eaten raw. Things like rice, or
flour.... Raw meat from your owns kills is good, but our food supply is contaminated. Meat from stores must be cooked. "wilson" wrote in message om... Cheers, Ada Good point, although I'm not as concerned about dietary cholesterol, but blood lipid measurements. The fish I am told that are best to eat for that purpose are the deep sea fish with the high omega 3 content. Someone I know just improved all his numbers dramatically by going to an all fish, low-ish carb, low "bad fat" (good fats are ok) diet. I'm trying to play around with moving a bit in that direction, though maybe not that extreme. Rebecca |

Why are you eating meat every single meal every single day in the first place?! Well, not *every* meal - but usually two meals a day. I generally eat a serving of high protein low carb something or other plus a serving of something or other green, at every meal. Sometimes that means a can of tuna and a salad. But yeah. It gets monotonous and my colon is probably going to jump through my throat and throttle me in twenty years. I attended a raw vegan potluck today (was invited at the spur of the moment by a newly made friend) and was amazed at how tasty and low-carb some of the food actually was, and also it's delicious in the hot weather; what I'm thinking is that I'll start adding the raw vegan dishes for variety. Almost all of them except the heavy fruit ones are lower carb, though some (like cauliflower/cashew puree) are lower carb than others (like sprouted lentils). I couldn't do it as a total lifestyle change, though. |

I used to eat vegetarian, and still really like the dishes, but haven't explored through the cookbooks because I've been focusing on low-carb in recent years. I'd love to find some interesting lower-carb vegetarian dishes. I'm pretty much on maintenance now, so don't need to stay at induction levels of carbs, so this seems like a possibility to me.
