While caffeine is a mild diuretic, there is no way in hell that it makes
you urinate more liquid than you are taking in via the soda/tea/whatever.
Yes if you take a caffeine pill, obviously that doesn't apply as the pill
has no moisture to begin with. That being said, drinking water is still
good for you and tends to kill -thirst- whereas you may still be thirsty
after gulping down a diet soda, as it tends to make your throat dry.
However if it was a sever diuretic than made you expel more liquid than
you took in drinking 8 sodas in a day, I'd be a dead man.

Anything with cafine in it isn't considered water. The cafine is a diaretic
and isn't helpful in hydrating the body.

Default Tea and soda water doesn't count as water?

Hi Folks,

The Atkins website states that you must drink 8 glasses of water
daily to remain hydrated. AND it says water from tea, coffee, and
soda, (and I assume soup), does NOT count.

Why not? It doesn't make sense.

Thanks,

J.

No it doesn't make sense and it is an old wives tale. Once in the body,
water molecules are separated from any other components of the ingested
fluid and they are all treated the same way. One reason that some say
coffee should not be counted is that it has a diuretic effect which reduces
its ability to hydrate.

It isn't just expelling more liquid. Diuretics cause calcium and other
important minerals to be flushed/leeched from your system more excessivly
than the same amount of water. Since it is suggested to take supplements
while on a Low Carb diet...what's the point of quickly flushing any help
they'd give you out of your body?

Because it tastes good, makes you feel better, and is a vice that you
don't have to be ashamed to admit to?

Gotta have my espresso every day.

I do tend to drink a mixture of black and green tea more than coffee
though. At least eight mugs of tea per day, and only one or two of coffee.

Besides, (as long as you don't look to closely at the commercial
relationships of the testing authorities), there are many recent test
claims extolling the health benefits of moderate coffee consumption.

Regards

David
