Truth in Labeling
Watch those labels dieters. You know about how they round off calories
and nutrients so they can tell you something has zero fat when in fact it has half a gram per serving. If you eat a lot of something, you might be getting a lot of fat, in other words. Even Splenda and Equal are not really zero calories. They are 4 calories per packet. Not significant unless you eat a lot of it such as in cooking. Also misleading is the idea of something being low fat if it contains 1% fat....milk for example. Since milk is mostly water, 1% is significant. The proper way to look at fat is to figure the number of fat calories as a percent of total calories, so an 8 oz. glass of 1% milk (one serving) has 20 calories from fat out of 110 cal total. That is 18% fat...the proper way to look at fat. Looking at other foods this way is an eye opener. Green beans for example have more protein than a Big Mac when you look at protein calories as a percentage of total calories. |
