Default Off Topic Seat Belt Extenders and Car Rental Agencies

Last week I was in a rented car with my brother. We asked for seat belt
extenders, but the rental agency did not have them. Of course the seat
belts did not fit because of our size. We were driving to our mothers when
a suicidal deer jumped out in front of us. He chose to hit the guard rail
instead of the deer. I ended up in the emergency room, was treated and
released. I immediately went to see my primary care physician and got
appropriately treated. They missed little important things like, I needed a
personal care attendant because it hurt too much for me to do much. It was
5 days before I could drive again. I've talked to several lawyers about
suing the car rental agency for renting a car without proper safety
equipment for a fat person. Every time I talk with a lawyer they roar in
laughter and of course don't want to take the case. It doesn't matter to
them that in all 50 states we are supposed to be belted when in a moving
car. After all, Airlines have seat belt extenders. I bet someone had to
sue them before they started to provide them. Gee, I was so messed up I
needed a personal care attendant to assist with personal hygene, cooking and
cleaning. I missed several days of appointments and the last thing I need
now is to get stuck paying for a bunch of medical bills because I am unable
to get a personal injuy lawyer to take my case. I'm still dealing with pain
and it has been more than a week since the accident. No, I haven't been
staying low carb through all this with all the depression and pain I haven't
exactly felt like eating much of anything. The really sad thing is that I
have a valid point. When I was in Vegas the same car rental company did
have seat belt extenders. Had I been belted I doubt I would have had any
injuries.

Did you consider not driving without seat belts?

See, what you need to do is take responsibility for yourself for a change
instead of expecting others to do your thinking for you, and expecting to be
compensated when something goes wrong.

If you think about it, you may find that that's how you got so big that you
can't wear regular seat belts in the first place.

I'm truly sorry you were hurt but if you were that concerned about your
safety you should have walked out the door and rented a car somewhere else.
It was your choice to get into that car and drive without
seatbelts.

Laws are not going to make the world a safe place. We need to take
responsibility for ourselves and our own safety rather than expect lawsuits,
lawyers, and lawmakers to regulate the world to suit our individual needs.

If you routinely rent cars I would suggest you purchase your own
extenders so this doesn't happen again. Or at the very least do your
homework and find rental agencies who provide the services you need before
you do business with them.

I have seat belt extenders in my own vehical. The problem is they are not
universal. When you buy a car if you ask for them the manufacturer will
provide them free. The choice was either rent a car or have no car. When
we were in Vegas the same company had seat belt extenders. Which is why we
returned to the same company in the first place.

Um, yeah. I have a medical condition that got me this big. When Atkins
first came out I was on it as a teenager. I lost a lot of weight and got
into the lifestyle, but you know what the medical profession thought of
Atkins back then, so unfortunately I listened to them. When I was diagnosed
with insulin resistance I was encouraged to give Atkins a try I have been
kicking myself ever since because I had the answer back in the 70's.

If you KNOW you will need them, why not ask when you make your reservations?
If they are not available, call a different agency. Personal safety isn't
the kind of thing I like to take for granted. It was, after all, your
choice to rent the car knowing extenders were not available.

I am sorry about the accident and the pain, but yes, it was your
choice to throw safety concerns out of the window when you decided to
drive without a safety belt. Nobody made you do it. It was your own
free decision. I know it would have been a hassle or impossible to
get another car in an acceptable time frame, but still, it was your
choice.
Should you rent a car again in the future, ask for extenders when you
book the car. I hope you get better soon again, and good luck with the
weight loss.
