What's the Problem with Soy?

... My periods are lighter, just coming more frequently. No spotting in between. They're also painless where I used to suffer from horrible cramps, so it's sort of a good thing. And it started the month before I added any soy at all to my diet, so I'm with my doctor in that it's likely coincidental. If they don't get back to normal frequency within the next couple of months, I'll talk to a gyno doctor about it. I've been reading this newsgroup on and off for years now and even before all the soy-based low-carb foods were available, posts from women about changes in their cycle, heavy periods, etc. were common. Apparently sudden shift to a low-carb diet causes a shift in hormones and that affects periods for the first few months. From anecdotal reports, this appears to even out after a few months. Not to say that eating a lot of soy foods couldn't have some sort of effect, just that these changes appear to happen even without them, in many women when they change to a low-carbohydrate diet. What's the Problem with Soy?
Werdna quoth:
Soy is rendered almost harmless by fermentation, but nothing else. So Tempah and Miso (and soy sauce I think) are ok, but the rest (tofu, soy milk, soy protien bits, etc) should be only eaten in extreme moderation. Have you mentioned this to the population of Asia? Priscilla |

What's the Problem with Soy?
Thanks Hannah. I found that had been reported by doing a google search
when it first happened. So I'm not concerned at this point. If they continue to be more frequent after the next few months, I'll look at my soy intake as a possible cause. But I have my doubts that eating 2/3 cup of black soy beans 3 to 5 times a week could have that drastic an effect. on Mon, 26 Jul 2004 07:00:36 -0400, "Hannah Gruen" wrote: I've been reading this newsgroup on and off for years now and even before all the soy-based low-carb foods were available, posts from women about changes in their cycle, heavy periods, etc. were common.
