Mary M/Ohio wrote: Sorry I haven't been around for the past week or so and have missed many posts -- I had lots and lots and lots of other activities, as I'm sure most of you did too. Well I wasn't vigilant at all over the holidays -- convenience of food sitting out combined with emotional and celebrational eating all spelled out F-A-T-T-E-R. Well I am eating healthy today and the last few days have been better than previous ones. Have been having a lot of heel pain from walking, so I haven't been keeping up with that either (though I did today) and I am going to order a new pair of shoes right now in case that helps -- I have a feeling it will. Hope everyone is doing well. Mary M 325- I don't want to know - 150 Glad to see you posting again. Hope those new shoes fix the heel problem. You're not alone in getting back on track after the holidays. My scale saw a couple pounds creep back on from all the holiday activities. Thankfully those are over for another year Beverly My gosh, it's great to see names I know! I appreciate how many "regulars" answered this post -- I don't recognize a soul in most of the other postings -- the Jan. 1 syndrome I suppose. Yes, the new shoes have been great -- I don't know why I can't remember that they are the most important thing in making sure that my feet feel OK -- it just seemed that my other shoes were "still new," though obviously they weren't. I had bought three pairs in June and was switching off with them, but two of them were trail shoes of the same variety as my running shoes -- I didn't realize that that makes a big difference in how they perform on the treadmill or in regular walking. So my trail shoes are now strictly for trails, and I've ordered two pairs of my running shoes (one at a big discount, yay). One already came yesterday and what a difference new shoes make. Like you, I am glad to get back to a routine -- time to burn those pounds off! Happy New Year, Beverly! Mary |

I just got a notice that my library reserve is in for Passing for Thin (the book about the woman who lost half her weight) -- and that will most likely give me a good shot of inspiration. Well, I understand, but I'm not sure I quite approve :-). It sounds a little too close to avoiding stepping onto the scale because you know you're gaining -- and I've been there in the past when I put weight back on. But it does sound like you're set to get back on track. And yesterday my new shoes arrived. I ordered them at 3 p.m. from Zappos.com and UPS delivered them by 1 p.m. the next day -- no shipping charges. I was dumbfounded at the speed of delivery, and took it as a sign to get right back on that treadmill. Zappos has incredible customer service! Chris |

Mary Your post about the new shoes made me realize it's probably time for me to buy a new pair of running shoes. I've noticed the feet are a little tired after a couple miles on the treadmill. I have two pair but they're both over 4 years old. I've been too busy buying biking related items in the past couple years and have neglected the walking/running equipmentg I'm thinking about doing a program with the park system called "Hike for the Health of It" and they recommend hiking boots. I have a pair but I'm not sure they're suited for this type of walking. I'll find out this weekend as the hike is in the park near home. It's only 2 miles so if they aren't suitable I won't suffer muchg It seems like I've been here on ASD for years. I believe I joined the group in 98 or 99. Reading and posting has been a great aid for me. It hasn't always kept me from gaining a few pounds but it has kept me from giving up the never ending battle to keep the weight off. This *is* the year I'm going to get below 140 and stay here!!!! Beverly 177/142/~140 |

Mary, I'm so glad to hear you're managing to get back on track. But as I read this paragraph in your post it sounded SO like all the times I postponed going back to a slimming club/going for a medical checkup/seeing an old friend - insert what you like here - until I'd got my weight back under control. For me this definitely never turned out to be a good idea - are you sure it is for you? Are you sure it isn't better to face your nutritionist, who has surely been supportive to you throughout, and then you should have a really measurable improvement by the time your next appointment after that comes? Like so much to do with food and weight issues, this is probably something that entirely depends on the psychology of the individual. Anyway, whatever you do please keep posting here - I do like to know how things are going for you. I've followed your progress with great interest and I want to know that you're OK. I think I snipped a bit where you said something like you would have once given anything to wear size 12 pants, but it doesn't seem the same now you've grown back into them from size 8. I find this one of the hardest things to come to terms with when I'm regaining. Sizes that were a cause of great celebration on the way down feel fat and uncomfortable on the way up. Again, a lot of this is in the mind - if someone could brainwash you into thinking you were on the way down, size 12 would probably feel really small. It sure is a difficult and complex business. janice (who will now own up to having gained 10 lbs in 14 days over the holiday period) |

Several times when I knew I had gained weight I just didn't want to know how much damage I had done until I had a couple weeks to start fixing the situation. Once I felt I had lost a few pounds and jumped back on the scales I was usually surprised to discover it hadn't been as bad as I had imagined. I know this is probably not the best way to handle the situation but so far it's worked for me. Beverly |

I saw your original post but wasn't in any condition to give a real response. I am glad that you're making progress. The holidays aren't an easy time. I found that I need different shoes for doing the treadmill than the ones I use on the road or trails. Normally I use a stability/motion control shoe but the treadmill requires more cushioning for me. I have a friend who is very into shoes (and handbags) and cringes at my limited dress shoe/boot collection - I insist on wearing my Land's End all-weather mocs everywhere these days, but then she could not figure out why I have so many workout shoes Well, there's a pair for the treadmill, one for outdoor running, one for outdoor winter running (with screws for traction), one for biking, one for other outdoor activities, one for volleyball (indoor), one for other indoor workouts (like weightlifting), etc.... Get thee to a running shoe store! :-) Chris The pair I've been wearing probably has the most miles on them. The other pair has been shoved in the back of the closet and hasn't been used as much. I'm beginning to think the cushioning in them has broken down. I've noticed a problem with all shoes recently that may be contributing to the foot problem. I feel as if the padding on the bottom of my feet has been disappearing. I've noticed this when walking barefooted through the house. It's especially noticeable on the hardwood floors. I'm going to the mall this afternoon and will try to make it to the running store. I normally get sidelined at the bike shop which is near the running storeg Beverly |
