What do _you_ bring in JC?
Teaching is not notorious for high pay which is why there are so few
good ones. I'd love to teach Junior High.

After 18 years, I only bring in $1,400 per paycheck after taxes every 2
weeks. I don't recommend Medical Technology as a degree.

For a BS, the starting pay sux.

Hi Om

Well, 1400 is not that bad. My husband without overtime, brings home less
than that(not much less, but less), we have quite a bit going out in 401K
and medical, though. He is considered to make decent money( we are in
Washington state). Our mort is high, and we have other bills. We still pay
our student loans I just don't know how someone can have student loans and
not be able to pay them back---esp till it gets to the point of garnishment.
My husband gets yearly bonuses and that does help, but still.

I do agree that BS starting pay sucks. I am a year from my nursing degree(
previously in dental), and the pay difference from an associates in nursing
to a BS, is only a dollar. Ridiculous.

Teachers, IMO, are not paid nearly enough. I used to be a teachers Aid
before my x-ray certification, and I was disgusted with how kids talk/treat
teachers. There was one middle school where I left. I called the school
district up immediately and told them why. I also made it quite clear that I
would not be willing to work in *any* middlel school again. LOL. I liked
High School kids much more. Kindergarden was the best overall--not yet
sarcastic and a dirty look got their attention My cousin is a 4th grade
teacher and since her husband also works, she doesn't mind the low pay. She
loves her job.

What part of the medical field are you in, Om? I apologize in advance if you
have already discussed it.

Wow. That is hard. Is there anyway you can work a diff shift than him to
help out? You don't want bad credit or garnishment.

was
promised 1.25 more by a supervisor but only got 40 cents.. needless

to
say
jeff was mad... if he had got the 1.25 we would not still qualify...

he
is
going to talk to the personel manager on monday

Tori

But would the food stamps be worth more than his additional raise in
actual dollar amount???

yup it would.. we need to get taxes fixed we have too much taken out
and
stop with the 401k and also convince the student loan people we are too
poor
to have his wages garnished.

How would you convince the the bank who loaned you/or your husband the

money
for school, to not garnish his checks? There are ways to pay back
student
loans without having your checks garnished. You can pay interest only for

X
amount of years..etc. You *have* to pay back student loans. I don't get

it.

my point is that we KNOW we need to pay it back but cannot do so at this
time. Especialy at 60$ a pay check.. He brings home 578 ervery two weeks
right now.

ACK~ What level?

I've taught at all levels, but this coming year I'm going to teach
Juniors.

I *love* math. My son does also---he is majoring in engineering. He has
one year left. My 18 yr old is absolutely stupid in math. She thinks it's
funny. I want to smack her when she asks dumb questions like, "what is 81
minus 71?" I don't find it funny at all---pure stupidity. My 20 yr old is
majoring in architecture. She is extremely smart in the math area.

My 14 year old daughter has already pretty much mastered Advanced Algebra
and Trigonometry. Now she's going to start on the fundamentals of
Calculus.

Do you grade on a curve?

No. I also don't give partial credit, extra credit, or have the students
keep a notebook for a grade. I expect them to actually learn a little
math.

Good for you Nothing worse than a lazy kid. As I said in my other post, my
18yr old is going to have a rude awakening with the amt of math she chose to
learn. The thing is, kids shouldn't be able to choose how much they want to
learn. There should be guidelines on what they should have to know before
graduating.

Which part of "high school mathematics" did you not understand?

Hmmmmm.... I saw differential equations when I was in high school.
Are you teaching the classes for dummies? :-)

High school students used to have Calculus and Trig' available when I
went to High School! Has our school system been "dumbed down" that much
now? :-(

Yep. My kids had calculus and Trig. I have no idea how my 18yr old
graduated. She was awful at math---and didn't give a damn about it.

She might grow out of it...... :-)

What does she want to do for a living?

Lol. Well, not that this bad, it's an honost living, but she wants to be a
cosmotologist. I *guess* if she were to move to a bigger city, and focus, she
could make some good money. My sister pays 68 for a fricken haircut. Dumb.

Right nows she is working 2 jobs, living on her own( finding out rather
quickly how hard it is), and had bought her own car She is a good kid,but
education is a big thing in our family, and when I see how she thinks it's
funny to know no more than elementary math, it ****es me off.. YKWIM?

Although a multi-vitamin is not a panacea, I think it puts us ahead of

I do NOT think teacher quality has fallen over the years.
More and more have better and better college educations.

...
I think the source of the problem is what the curiculum
has become.

Wrong.

You disagree, yet almost the entire response is about how
too many students are put into the wrong classes. Aren't
qualifications for each class a part of its cirriculum?

These days the curriculum (this is the correct spelling, btw)

Thanks for the correction.

is watered down so that the students can meet their
parents expectations. What is passed off as Algebra II now would have
barely been adequate for Basic Algebra way back when.

And more comments about cirriculum changes for the worse.

On the other hand, the
AP and Pre-AP curriculum is as challenging or even more challenging than
ever.

I took the AB anc BC Calculus AP tests when I was in high
school. There were no partial differential equations to
be found. Only single variable ones.

Now there is a push to enroll more students into these classes, so
we'll see if that brings down the whole system. In any case, the problem is
not the curriculum. The problem is that each successive set of politicians
tries to outdo those before them by baffling the taxpayers with some
bull**** which breaks down to the notion that everyones kids should be able
to get an A+ in every advanced class available. Without working too hard at
it.

You exclude qualifications for being in a class, I don't.
The source of our disagreement.

Teaching doesn't pay too badly for the amount a person has to work.

I get 40K for 190 days. In El Paso, that's not too shabby. The
starting
pay is not too much lower.

That's the advantage to living in Texas... ;-)

El Paso? You have my condolences! Last time I drove thru there, the air
was horrible with all the new factories going in over the Rio Grande
where the pollution is not regulated. :-( Thanks to NAFTA!

I work down in the valley where all the smog is, but I live higher up in the
desert closer to New Mexico on the east side, out by the Bowden ranch.
There's a huge difference in air quality. El Paso doesn't look like much
from I10, but it really has many redeeming qualities. Like super cheap
labor. ;-)

snort I'll bet!

What are you trying to make me envy you? lol

That is a beautiful mountain range (The Sangre de Christo?), and you are
right. The pollution hovers over the city only due to altitude and
prevailing winds.

As do the dust storms!
