Report on new YMCA
The brand-spanking-new YMCA, two miles from my house, opened this
month. It is having the expected problems — too few trainers/instructors; steps for step aerobic classes have not arrived; the bikes for spinning classes have not been calibrated and therefore are not ready to use; construction is still under way, so all the locker rooms are not open. I have only taken a few classes, because many of those convenient for my second-shift work schedule were cancelled. I could not get an appointment until Oct. 12 to be trained on the Cybex weight machines and get a password for the Fitlinxx computer. On the plus side, the new Y has two dozen treadmills, 16 recumbent and upright stationary bikes, eight elliptical trainers, one rowing machine and one machine which one can pedal with one's hands and arms. The pool is relatively small at 25 meters and just five feet deep at its deepest. But it is easy to get in and out of, and has a motorized sling to lower and raise people who don't have use of their legs. There is also a rock climbing wall and a regulation-size basketball court. I've been walking (no more than 30 minutes at no faster than 2.5 MPH to prevent recurrence of bursitis) on the treadmill. I can only last six minutes on the ellipitical trainer I'm adding 30 seconds each session; it is hoped I can build up to 30 minutes, and I'm building up to 30 minutes on the stationary bike. In a related development, today I had cortisone shots in both hips to ease bursitis. I must avoid exercise for the rest of the week, then I can resume my hour-a-day routine at the new Y. Your workout sounds much like mine when I started. About 4 months going almost every week day I am now at 45 min 4 to 4.5 MPH on the treadmill, and I can do 60 min of elliptical, however if I want to get anything else done for the rest of the day I go for 30-40 min. It's a great feeling to know that I now can walk up a flight of stairs, walk up a steep hill and just keep up w/ my little ones w/o sucking wind. Actually it's so automatic to me now, I hardly even notice. My point is: You can and will "get there" just by keeping w/ a good program that works for you. Best of luck. btw, i HATED the elliptical when I first started, now it's my favorite 'ride' ~Kat "help is on the way" ~John Kerry |

Kasey 365/235/??? It sounds like a nice facility, Kasey. Ours opened a couple years ago and experienced the same type of problems. I'm sure most new places go through the same thing. Ours is running smoothly now so it won't be long before yours is functioning smoothly, too. Take care of the bursitis. Hopefully it will clear up soon. Beverly |

Kasey 365/235/??? Slow and easy does it, as they say. : ) Sounds like you'll have a great time. It's nice to have the pool, I swim once a week at the USF (univ. of San Francisco) Koret Fitness Center and I love it. I also enjoy climbing, although I want to get into real rock climbing soon.
