Hello,

I found this group thanks to Ken Bessler posting about his medical miracle
on alt.support.stop-smoking. Congratulations Ken! I quit smoking almost 5
months ago and I am trying very hard to lose weight now. I had already put
on a lot of weight in the past years since coming down with fibromyalgia,
going through menopause and depression. No diets seem to work for me.

Recently I started a no-carb diet. I wonder if you could let me in on what
exactly you all are doing in order to lose weight?

Thanks,
Katie

Hey Katie! I'm on AS3 too. As to your question, I don't think anyone here
is doing a "no-carb" diet. It's LOW carb, not no carb. Carbs are in
everything except meat, and we don't just eat meat.

Which plan you go on is up to you. Here are some of the formal diet plans
some of us are on:

Atkins
South Beach
Protein Power
Neanderthin
Carbohydrate Addict's Diet

There are more but I can't remember them all.

If you start researching those online, maybe one of those will jump out at
you as something you think fits your personality and your lifestyle.

If you don't want to do someone else's plan, and you'd rather make up your
own, that's ok too. The best diet to go on is one that eliminates or
severely limits those foods that you, personally, find hard to stop eating.
For most people, that ends up being starchy and/or sugary foods. It's
quite easy to mindlessly munch on a big tubful of popcorn, or a big bag of
chips or candy, and never feel full. A bit harder to do that with
hardboiled eggs or steak, huh?

Anyway, to be a bit more specific, my plan, which enabled me to lose 50
pounds (before I quit smoking and gained back 8, lol), started thusly:

No potatoes, corn, pasta, bread, fruit, milk, or sugary stuff like candy,
cakes, etc.

I ate as much meat, cheese, eggs, and vegetables (other than pasta or corn)
that I wanted.

I started working out, first at Curves, then later on at the YMCA.

After about the first 40 pounds, I had to start paying more attention to
portion size.

I lost weight doing Atkins WOE (Way of Eating). I am glad you joined in. I have
a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia too. There are others in here also. The WOE has
improved the symptoms of FMS. Yet some still remain. A little improvement is
better than none at all. I no longer have IBS, painful knees, Urinary or Kidney
troubles. Allergies have even cleared up. Trying to remember all the things
thats improved. Fibro fog here at times. I have lost around 70 pounds so far, I
started the WOE in January 2004.

Anyway, welcome to the group!
Once you choose which plan you want to try. Buy the book and read it from cover
to cover first. Look forward to reading you.

Good Luck!
Congrats on the quitting smoking. I am going to try and quit again myself. I
set this weekend as my quit date.

Hi!
Sorry about that last one that was empty! Thanks for the info. I am looking
up the diets you mentioned.

I said I'd begun a "no carb" diet, but meant that I have cut out potatoes,
rice, pasta, bread, anything sugary and alcohol.

Carbs have always been addictive for me so I will probably check out the
Carbohydrate Addict's Diet.
Thanks muchly.
Katie

Hello, it's nice to meet a fellow fibromite although I'm sorry it has to be
the case for both of us. Could you tell me a little bit about the WOE diet?
I remember Atkins from long ago and I also remember it being classified as
unhealthy by certain people. I have a cookbook for people with Fibro. It
says to avoid fat, red meat, green peppers, eggplant, alcohol... If milk
products are used, it's usually low-fat yogurt. It's hard to find my way in
all these diets.

So glad you have noticed an improvement in your health.

I certainly wish you luck quitting smoking. It's a tricky addiction.

All the best and take care,
Katie

In my opinion, ironically the Carbohydrate Addict's Diet is the one that
makes the least sense for people who are truly addicted to carbs. Since
you're an ex-smoker too, maybe you will get this analogy. To me the CAD is
like a program to quit smoking where you don't smoke all day, but then you
can smoke as much as you want for a one hour period at night. Huh?

I guess if you try it and it doesn't help with cravings, you can always
move on to something more strict.
