Default What am I doing wrong?

Hi everyone,

I've been lurking in this group for a while now so I thought it was
time to introduce myself.

Im a 34 year old male 5'8" and currently weigh in at 214lbs

I started Atkins about 3 years ago and had some considerable success
having lost approximately 40 lbs over 8 months. I was reasonably happy
with that loss and I balanced the diet so that I was maintaining that
weight. Approximately a year ago I lost the path slightly and the
pounds started to creep back on :-(

So back to the present, I decided to go back on Induction about 2
months ago weighing 216lbs. Stuck to induction rigorously for 2 weeks
and I lost about 1 pound if I was lucky (was in ketosis from about day
3). Have increased the carbs slightly by adding more vegetables and
had one slight blow out when I had a few too many glasses of red wine.

I'm essentially sticking to the diet that I done a few years ago but
as you can see I've only lost 2lbs in 2 months. Ketostix are still
purple and I'm drinking plenty water.

I'm starting to get really frustrated about this now and considering
packing it in. I logged about a weeks worth of my typical diet in
fitday (minus the wine, only done that once in 2 months).

http://www.fitday.com/WebFit/PublicJ...o%5Fthe%5Fwild

As you can see I'm probably not eating my 10 x 214 calories per day
although as an experiment I did eat about 2000 a day for 1 week and it
didn't make any difference.

I'd be really grateful for your expert advice on this.

Thanks in advance

Other folks on this NG will be able to help you specifically after reading
your FitDay menus...I just have my own experience to share. I started LCing
last summer and lost 20 pounds really quickly, without much exercise. Then
I stopped LCing for ten months after moving overseas - luckily, I didn't
gain those 20 lbs back during this time. I started again in June, but the
weight is not falling off my body like it was last year. I don't know why,
it just isn't.

In July, I started an exercise routine, and the scale is moving again. Not
nearly as quickly as last year, but it's happening. Measuring tape is
showing changes, too.

To sum up my experiences - 1. My second time LCing has not seen the
dramatic weight loss of my first time; and 2. This time, I have to devote
myself to exercise if I want to see any weight loss

Hope this helps

Thanks Staci,

It's almost like the low carb diet doesn't have the same "shock" factor on
the metabolism that it did the first time.

I go back to eating carbs and the body says "OK no problem back to burning
glucose" when i go lowcarb the body says "Hey no problem I can do ketones as
well"

I don't do much exercise (maybe i should, didn't have to the last time
though) apart from walking about at work.

Thanks for the reply.

Accoring to various sources I'm allready eating too little!! I'm only eating
on average 1700 calories per day. A man of my weight should be eating approx
2000 just to keep the basal metabolic processes running.

I've tried eating more, eating less and doing some excercise.

Any other ideas?

I've found that most of the time this "eat so many calories per pound"
theory is incorrect. It might be proper to calculate calorie consumption
based on your goal weight, but I found that if I eat even 8 calories per
pound of bodyweight, I will gain weight. I am currently eating about 7-8
calories per pound of my goal weight, and I am losing weight quite steadily.
If you eat the right foods, this is a lot of food to eat. Many days I am
even below this level without being hungry. Try to maintain about 3-5% of
your calories as carbs, 20% as protein, and the rest as fat. Too much
protein can also cause issues. I've lost about 55 pounds in 5 months doing
this, and this is without any regular exercise workout. Although, I have
been very physically active this summer. As fall approaches, I suspect I
will have to get back into my workout routine as time permits.
