Default OT - medical question - urinary sediment

Ok, before you guys all tell me *go see a doctor* I'll say upfront I *do*
have a doctor's appt, but it's not for 2 weeks. But many of you guys have
seen lots of things, and I'm trying to get some ideas in the meantime.

For the last couple weeks, on and off, I have been having some strange
sediment in my urine. The urine itself is perfectly clear, not at all
cloudy, no unusual odors. Normal in all regards, except for this sediment,
little dark brown or blackish flecks in the urine. It looks as if I've peed
into a toilet that someone had flicked cigarette ashes into. Sometimes it is
just 2-3 small specks. Sometimes none at all and the urine is perfectly
clear and normal. Tonight the flecks were largish, as long as a 1/4 inch and
half again as wide, all dark brown.

Certainly nothing I've ever seen before, and nothing I've been able to
really get a handle on with googling. Anyone ever seen anything like this?

Debbie

debbie,
those flexs could be dried blood, and two weeks is too long to
wait...................
call your doctor and get that appointment moved to tomorrow, or
collect a urine and show up at the ER TONIGHT!

It sounds like flecks of dried blood. Nothing in your urinary system
normally produces anything that looks like that. Call your doctor's
office and explain and see if you can get your appointment moved up.
It may just be an infection higher up in the urinary tract, but best
to nip it in the bud.

I'd agree with that, sounds like tiny clots of blood cells. Several
years ago, a basic urine screen tested positive for microscopic amounts
of blood, but it wasn't visible. The first thing they did was an
oncological testing of a urine sample. As that was negative, some other
tests determined the source as a harmless leaky capillary.

Debbie, two weeks isn't soon enough if it's something serious. It
could be nothing, but if your kidneys are having problems they need
attention *now*. Original equipment is a precious commodity. Please
try to reschedule the appointment on a stand-by basis (if possible).
Tell the appointment scheduler to ask a doctor or nurse for input
based on the symptom. That might get you some action - at least it
should.

Have you started taking any meds in the past couple of weeks?

Take care,
Carmen

Hi Debbie,
If it isn't blood in your urine, it may possibly be sugar. My mom's toilet
has black specks in it (in between cleanings) that come from her urine and
I've been told its sugar because she's diabetic II, and she is not managing
it well. She's on insulin and still eats way to many fruits and white crap.
Hope the info on this thread helps you. Is there any walk-in clinics in
your area that you could go to until you see your Doc?
Monica.

If you call the dr.'s office again and let them know you suspect blood
in your urine they would make other arrangements... I would hope
that at the very least they would let you come drop in and leave a
sample to be tested.

LOL, well you scared me so I ended up going to the after hours Urgent Care
center that my doctor's medical group runs. They said they would run a
urinalysis.

Well the results were...... Perfectly Normal! My urinalysis was as close to
textbook normal as a urinalysis could be! There was no hint of any sort of
infection. There was absolutely no blood. The doctor said the test they use
is extremely sensitive and picks up even the very minutest traces of blood,
and this registered none at all. I had no fever, no physical symptoms of any
ailment. In fact I feel excellent.

So the bottom line is that he had not the faintest clue what it could be,
but felt it was nothing particular to worry about, and to mention to my
regular doctor when I have my scheduled appointment in 2 weeks and see if
she feels it's worth following up with.

Thanks for the update, glad to hear everything is alright.

Good. What I didn't mention is that there's a kidney disease where
there's some necrosis and the brown or black shreds/flecks are dead
kidney tubule material. Besides infections certain drugs can cause it
too. Glad to hear it's nothing. :-)

Take care,
Carmen
