Over what timescale are you talking about? I understand it's
reasonably common for cholesterol to go up for the first few weeks on
low carb and then to level out or drop. Which is why Atkins, for
example, says that you should get your cholesterol checked before
starting and then again a few months later.

Oh yes. My HDL and hence my totals have gone up 20 points, from 60 to 80
something. My LDL went down about 2 points, so not enough to offset the
jump. My triglycerides have been approximately halved, but they don't seem
to figure into the totals in a readily discernable way.

Clearly it's true, increasing your consumption of eggs and fats can lead
to higher cholestorol.

But I'd rather have HDL of 80 even if it means people who just look at the
totals freak out at mine.

Martha, and with a hs-CRP of 1, I'm feeling pretty good about low carb.

After 90 days of Atkins (with no regard for saturated vs. unsturated fats
consumed) -- including nutritional supplements such as fish oil, flax seed
oil, time release niacin and odorless garlic capsules --- my total
cholesterol dropped from 232 to 188. HDL increased; LDL decreased to normal
range. My triglyceride levels dropped from an extremely dangerous 635 to
217, and are still falling.

These numbers and changes are all based on blood tests done in my doctor's
lab before (12/15/2003) and after 90 days (3/19/04) and are all documented.

My fasting blood glucose also dropped ffromo 135 to 91, and HbA1c dropped
form 9.0 to 6.0. 12/15/04 I was diagnosed as T2 diabetic, after the tests
on 3/19 my doctor said if I had not had the previously high blood glucose
readings, I would be diagnosed as not diabetic according to the latest
numbers.

Low-carb rocks, and is the healthiest way of eating. I expect that I've
extended my life span by years by continuing to improve these CV disease
indicators by staying with a lifetime of low-carb eating.

What an encouraging story - I think you must be on the +2 standard deviation
part of the Bell Curve. I'd be happy with just a portion of your success.

Has anyone here had there cholesterol go up from eating Low Carb style? for

Yes, I have. In November of 2003 my cholesterol was 174. I have my
cholesterol done once a year, for several years, and it has always been between
145-175. My triglycerides were normal and my LDL was in the good range. I've
never had high triglycerides and my LDL has always been good.

At the end of January of this year I began Atkins and in May of this year
(after losing 40 pounds) had my cholesterol done - I requested my doctor do a
cholesterol test because of the diet and it was 253. I was shocked! My LDL
was still good, as were the triglycerides.

I've since done a few modifications (cut out all bacon, use low fat yogurt,
less cream, less eggs/week - - I already eat mostly chicken and fish) and will
have it tested at the end of the summer. If it is still high then, I will go
off low carb and do something else to lose the remaining weight I want to lose.

I like eating low carb - I feel good and it works for me - as far as losing
weight, that is - but I'm not willing to stay on it if the high cholesterol
continues.

We pardon to the extent that we love.

Hopefully those results change. But dietary cholesterol may end up like
dietary sodium is for high blood pressure. Doesn't affect all, may not
even be close to all, but effects some of us nonetheless. I dont know
what your carb count is now, but have you tried to go higher, especially
in the non-starchy veggie and fruit areas?

That's what I'm hoping. Time will tell.

Yep, I think you're right, and unfortunately, I may be in that percentage.

I dont know
what your carb count is now,

Minus fiber - I average around 35. I have gone as high as 60 but I don't do
that on any regular basis. Just the odd occasion.

Not really, but I will begin experimenting in July. My daughter is marrying
and I'd like to lose what I can before then and what I'm doing seems to work -
as far as losing weight. After her wedding, I plan on doing exactly what you
are suggesting above. I eat a lot of vegetables right now - at least compared
to what I was eating! - but not all that much fruit - so I do plan on
increasing that.

Um, maybe I'm not understanding this, but if your LDL and triglycerides
are still good, then doesn't that mean that the reason your total has gone
up is because your HDL has?

If so, that's a good thing.

Really.

Martha
